Feb-14-07 DAPAAA Launches DAPAAAcast #4: Nuclear North Korea: U.S. Conundrum, A Virtual Seminar by Prof. Kang
| |

|
DAPAAA ANNOUNCES DAPAAACAST #4: NUCLEAR NORTH KOREA: U.S. CONUNDRUM, A VIRTUAL SEMINAR BY PROF. DAVID KANG
Co-Sponsored by DAPAAA and the Dartmouth Alumni Association of New York City
DAPAAA is proud to announce the fourth edition of its DAPAAAcast podcast series which is an audio recording of a recent seminar given by Prof. David Kang at the Dartmouth Club in New York City.
The seminar gives a fascinating and insightful look into the mysterious and isolated country that is North Korea. What was North Korea's motive in recently testing a nuclear bomb? Is Chairman Kim Jong-il really unstable? What is the best U.S. policy for dealing with North Korea and resolving the nuclear issue? Associate Professor of Government David Kang will provide insights into North Korea and its people, explore why the nuclear issue came about and how the "crisis" may unfold, and answer the ultimate question: What does it all mean for future U.S.-Korean relations?
The new podcast can be found either through iTunes by searching for "dapaaacast" in the iTunes podcast directory, or can be accessed directly via the following link:

We are proud to announce the launch of our third installment of DAPAAAcast, the podcast for the Dartmouth Asian Alumni community. This installment features Wen Kai Ying '01, aka DJ Kai, an up and coming dj and producer in the house music industry (and one of the few successful Asian American DJs in any music industry). We speak to Kai about how he got his big break in the music industry, why facing your fears is important, and what his most valuable asset at Dartmouth was (hint: it wasn't his textbooks).
If you'd like to learn more about DJ Kai, please visit his website at http://www.dj-kai.com. In the meantime, to access the latest DAPAAAcast, please head over to our podcast directory at:

Just a reminder, you can subscribe to our podcast by just searching for "dapaaa" in the iTunes podcast directory.
***Nominate the Next Podcast Candidate!***
We'd like to hear your stories. For future series of podcasts, we'd like to shine the spotlight on your friends and classmates. If you have a suggestion for an alum who is passionate about what they do and has made an impact on their community, send us their nomination and we'll consider them for our next podcast. If you have any thoughts or replies, send those as well and we may read your email in our next podcast!

Jul-18-06 A Message from Lydia Yu '07
| |
I want to let you know about a cause that can make a difference in your life and in your future, as it has in mine. A few months ago, I encountered prejudice in a way that I had neither experienced nor expected. As an aspiring lawyer, I was outraged to actually hear the hiring partner of a major international corporate law firm tell me that although they have many Asian associate attorneys, they have yet to promote an Asian to partner simply because "they're just not aggressive enough." He went on to reason that it was "a cultural thing" and that they were "not really 'partner' material."
His remarks made me realize that regardless of how much time and effort I dedicated to my studies and my work, the fact that I am Asian could be the major obstacle to prevent me from receiving equal consideration by my employers and from rising to the top of my profession. Will you too fall into that second-class category and be overlooked?
Most of us are only aware of anti-Asian discrimination that occurs in the public eye. Perhaps you've heard that the "Jersey Guys" radio show degraded mayoral candidate Jun Choi because "Chinese should never dictate the outcome of an election; Americans should." How did you respond to these incidents? Did you fight for change or did you stop short of making a stand?
Racism and xenophobia can have serious implications in your life. We have a reputation for being well-educated and well-off, but in reality, we're not doing as "well" as people think we are. 2000 Census statistics show that Asian-Americans don't earn as much as white Americans and just barely more than the per capita income of all Americans, while the percentage of Asian-Americans employed in management positions also fail to reflect our significantly higher secondary education rates. What does this all mean? Despite the fact that Asian-Americans are the most educated among all racial groups, the glass ceiling is preventing us from a full realization of success in the workplace.
I truly believe that in order to be a real advocate for change, we have to do more than just talk about the problems our community faces, and that is why I have chosen to support the 80-20 Initiative. 80-20 is a national, non-partisan political action committee that is dedicated to securing equality and equal opportunity for Asian-Americans. The goal is to unite and mobilize Asian-Americans to form a bloc vote, a target of 80% of Asian-American voters, to wield political leverage and power. 80-20 evaluates each viable presidential candidate's commitment to Asian-American rights issues and endorses the best candidate, pledging the support of the Asian-American bloc vote in return for legislative action in favor of equality and equal opportunity for Asian-Americans. 80-20 also works to educate and reach out to Asian-Americans across the country and to promote voter registration in the community.
To learn more, visit http://www.80-20initiative.net or feel free to contact me at lydia.yu@dartmouth.edu.
Thank you so much for your time. I really appreciate it!

Nov-03-05 Alumni Association Announces Special Meeting - Feb 12, 2006

Alumni Association Announces Special Meeting
HANOVER, NH - The new executive committee of the Dartmouth College Association of Alumni has called a special meeting for Sunday, February 12, 2006, in Hanover, New Hampshire. The meeting will allow alumni to consider and vote upon an amendment to the existing alumni constitution that would open the constitutional amendment process to all-media voting and correspondingly modify the size of the majority required to pass future amendments. Alumni must be present to vote.
"The executive committee heard from both sides of the aisle during the annual association meeting on October 23 in Hanover," says Al Collins '53, president of the Association of Alumni. "In response to the alumni sentiment reflected in those discussions, the committee will hold a special meeting on February 12 to try to make the transition to multimedia voting as quickly as possible. I welcome this occasion to be able to provide an opportunity for all alumni to participate in a broader, more inclusive process."

The Society of Asian Women Leaders (SAWL) invites you and your friends to an inspiring night with Pauline Lo Alker.
BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY: STRATEGY & CHOICES
It is a common misconception that as you rise up the professional ladder, you might escape some of the challenges which are common to all of us who have to make two choices:
Get home to make dinner or work on a proposal until the wee hours of the morning?
How ambitious can a woman be?
Moving up the career ladder obviously takes a personal toll. How can we women handle both successfully?
Join us at this special event as Pauline shares her remarkable stories with our group.
Pauline is currently starting her fourth company as President and CEO of A La Mobile, Inc. Most recently, she was President, CEO and Chairman of Amplify.net., which sold its technology and rights to its Japanese partner Takechiho Koheki Corporation in May 2004. Previously, Pauline was President and CEO of Network Peripherals, which she took public in 1994 and was named "1994's best IPO performer" by the Wall Street Journal and USA Today. In 1996, the company's sales rose to $53.1 million, and it continued its fast-paced development with the acquisitions of NuCom Systems Inc. of Taiwan in 1996, and NetVision Inc. of New York. Prior to Network Peripherals, Pauline held executive management positions at Convergent Technologies and Acer, Inc., the latter position following Acer's acquisition of Counterpoint Computers, a company she founded in 1984. Pauline came to the U.S. in 1960 to attend Arizona State University after spending her childhood in Hong Kong, where her family moved from China during the 1949 revolution. And now , her passion is to give her time to promising young professionals who are constantly searching for the values in life and to achieve a healthy balance between life and work.
Pauline will be spending some intimate time to share with us how she was able to balance such a successful career with family. Please join us for an inspiring evening. If you would like to carpool from downtown San Francisco and the South Bay, please indicate so in your response to the Evite.

Murray Hill, often referred to as "Curry Hill," justd got another Indian restaurant. Copper Chimney, a welcome addition to the 'hood, serves up southern and northern sub-continental delights. Nazeer's Dum Biryani is worth a visit alone: based on a family recipe that was passed down to owner Nazeer Ahmed from his father, this chicken or goat specialty dish includes basmati rice that is steamed with the gravy so that the flavor is infused throughout the dish, and served with eggplant chutney and raita.
