Rachel H. Bond, Acting Director
Rachel H. Bond is from Cochiti Pueblo, NM and a member of the Class of 1991. Rachel has spent the past 18 years working in Native education. After receiving a B.A. in Anthropology and in Education, she began her career as the Assistant Dean of Students and History teacher at The George School in Newtown, PA, where she established the Native Scholars program, an admissions and support initiative designed to bring Native students to the school and provide them with academic and social support. After three years at the George School, she went on to work in the Gifted & Talented Program at the Santa Fe Indian School, where she supported academic programming for middle and high school students, and also taught a course on conflict resolution. The New Mexico Office of Indian Affairs (now the Indian Affairs Department) hired Rachel as a state planner for education and healthcare, where she worked as a liaison between the 22 New Mexico tribes and the Governor’s office and the state legislature. In 1996, Rachel moved to New York City to head up an all-Native team of researchers at the National Museum of the American Indian, whose mandate was to provide curatorial direction and guidance as part of the exhibition master plan for the new NMAI facility being built on the mall in Washington, D.C. After the project was completed, Showtime Networks brought Rachel on board to head up research for and work with author N. Scott Momaday on a screenplay based on the historical Carlisle Indian Industrial School. Thereafter, Dr. Momaday hired Rachel as the Executive Director of The Buffalo Trust, a non-profit organization he founded to preserve Native cultures through exposure to and interaction with elements of their shared ancestral heritage under the direction of knowledgeable tribal elders and scholars. In her role as Acting Director of the NAP at Dartmouth, Rachel is working to provide academic support outreach, leadership development and community building for NAD students, and will work closely with the incoming new Director in ensuring a smooth transition for the new academic year. A single mother for the past 19 years (her son, Noah, was born during her senior year at Dartmouth), she is proud to say that he is now a member of the Class of 2013! Rachel encourages all NAAADS to connect and re-connect with her, and can be reached at Rachel.h.bond@dartmouth.edu or Rachel_bond68@yahoo.com.
