Born in Mankato, Minnesota, you were raised on the north side
of Chicago. In the fall of 1941, you arrived in Hanover as a member of the Class
of 1945. You were one of the very few in our class who actually graduated in
1945 — from Dartmouth and Thayer School, with a B.S. in Engineering. Your
next three years were spent in active duty with the Seabees in China and the
Philippines.
In 1946 you married Jocelyn Mason, a 1945 graduate of Wellesley College. You
became residents of Evanstown Illinois, where you wre blessed with a fine family
of four daughters and a son, Christopher, Dartmouth '72. Each of your daughters
graduated from an excellent college. All your children have married and you have
ten grandchildren.
Your business career consisted of being President and CEO of a corporate pipe
manufacturing company and President and CEO of the Chicago Fly Ash Company, whose
mission was to find and develop uses and markets for coal combustion by-products.
You also found time to serve two terms as alderman in Evanstown. In addition
you carried temporary responsibility as Mayor of the City.
In 1993 you and Jocelyn moved to Kendal in Hanover. Your sense for participation
has led you to serve on many important Kendal committees. You are the leader
of the weekly Kendal Kaffee Klatsch. You are also an enthusiastic genealogist.
A faithful alumnus since graduation, you are active in the Upper Valley group
of '45s and in the affairs of our class. You are a member of the Executive Committee
and are now serving as Class Secretary. You also are a special counselor and
care administrator to our estimable, if at times, beleaguered President.
Your steadfast loyalty to the College, to Thayer School, and to our class
is in the best Dartmouth tradition.
For all of these accomplishments, we are pleased to name you the CLASS OF
'45 MAN OF THE YEAR. Well done, Craig. Well done. |
