Class of '51 Column
Instead of interesting bits of information about living classmates coming to my mailbox, I'm getting smart-aleck notes about my 3-by-5 cards substituting as 1951 birthday cards. The most recent was from our California gold country lawyer, Ted Laskin. Not knowing that our "Dartmouth Row - Circa 1840" card was out of stock for three months, he thought there should be enough money in our treasury to send a real card.
One of the pleasures of sending birthday cards is to receive a note of thanks from new class widows I have added to our class roster. Sandy White, Dave White's widow, wondered how I knew her date of birth. As we all know, the College questionnaires we received early in our alumni years had a space for the spouse's date of birth. That's what I hunt for.
In the DAM issue of April 1958 secretary Loye Miller reported via Frank Smallwood "that Hanover experienced well over 80 inches of snow between January 9 and March 1." Sounds like 2008, doesn't it? Frank went on to describe the Waldorf-Astoria dinner for President Emeritus Hopkins and list our classmates who were there. Those included Arno Arrak, Harold Johnson, Jerry Mitchell, John Per-Lee, Dick Pugh, Frank Smallwood, Reed Badgley, Dave Krivitsky, Dave Leslie and Hank Sanders. Also there but no longer with us were Nels Bellesheim, Bob Bowler, Bill Duke, Julie Olney and Mike Iovenko. Also in that issue was the announcement that "Herb Robbins and Barbara Feinstein were married in Brooklyn last January and honeymooned in the Virgin Islands." Correction: Herb developed a fever of 104 the day before the wedding. Postponing the wedding was suggested but the bride, Bobbi, said, "Herb wold have a temperature of 104 anyway." So the wedding was held in the Manhattan home of his mother-in-law, with Woody Klein as best man. Herb these days has neurological health problems that limit his contact with others, but "life goes on" he says. Go online www.dartmouth.org/classes/51.com for mor lengthy obituaries of Tom Arnold and Nels Bellesheim.
