Michael Monroney
Mike Monroney died August 3, 2010 of cancer in Washington, D.C. Born in Boston and raised in Oklahoma City and Washington, D.C., he was graduated from St Albans School and served two years in the U. S. Navy before coming to Dartmouth. After graduation he was a staff reporter for the Washington Post until 1956 when he joined the 1956 presidnentiaql campaign of Adlai Stevenson. In 1957 he became Director of Infromation and Research for the Montgomery County (Maryland) government. In 1959 and 1960 he was on the staff of Congressman John Brademas (D--Indiana) and was also active in the Kennedy/Johnson campaign in northern Indiana. From 1961 to 1966 he served as executive assistant to three postmasters general, heading the Post Office Department's congressional relations. In 1966 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress in Maryland. From 1967 to 1970 he served as specail assistant to the President and CEO of COMSAT and then for three years represented a number of companies as a lobbyist.
From 1973 to 1988 he headed TRW's Washington office. In those years he also served on the boards of the Business--Government Relations Council and the Bryce Harlow Foundation. Following his retirement from TRW, he served as chairman of the Coalition for Fiscal Restraint and became a volunteer for the Concord Coalition. His marriages to Florence Neville Gherardi and Jocelyn Mason Murray ended in divorce.
Mike is survived by a son, Michael Jr., three daughters, Erin, Alice and Susanna and three grandchildren.
