Obituary Richard S. Reed

    Richard Stryker Reed died on October 5, 2007 of cancer. He was born in Tientsin, China and spent the war years in the United States, preparing for Dartmouth at the Haverford (Pennsylvania) School.  Dick majored in sociology and was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity.  While at Dartmouth he founded and became president of the local United World Federalists.   After graduation he joined the U. S. Marine Corps  as a second lieutenant.  

 

     As a platoon leader he saw combat duty in Korea and was decorated for valor, receiving two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained. His first marriage produced two sons who became physicians.  In the 1950's he worked for the Olin Corporation in New Haven, Connecticut before and affter obtaining an MBA degree from Yale University.  His specialty was international personnel, first with American Express in London and later with  two other listed companies. He was a career coach  to thousands of individuals helping them identify their competitive skills and maximize their contibutions and satisfactions.  He enjoyed a temporary assignment wiith the Department of Defense in 1972 besides maintaining his reserve status as a colonel in the Marines.  He married Edith 'Edie' Mathison in 1980.  Besides Edie he is survived by sons Timothy and Christopher, stepdaughter Tia and eight grandchildren.
