There was an excellent turnout of '51's at Brace Commons where Lu Martin
managed to carry on admirably despite Peter's touch of the flu.
Some
65 classmates, spouses and so forths gorged on soup, sandwiches, drinks
and conversation to fortify themselves for the traditional parade of classes.
Under the aegis of a brand new banner emblazoned with the slogan 'THE SPIRIT
OF '51 LIVES', those of us who were not too cold, tired or stuffed managed
to make it all the way to Dartmouth Hall to hear President Wright and assorted
sports captains importuning the various teams to hammer Harvard the next
day.
During the night the temperature dropped 20 degrees and the north wind
was blowing at 20 mph when the intrepid football fans huddled together
for warmth at the Thompson
Arena parking lot tailgate party. The game, such as it was, started
at noon, and the only ones who stayed till the end were the officials and
the players. In case you hadn't heard, Dartmouth lost. We might
have done better if John Clayton had listened to our pleas and filled in
at quarterback.
By early evening everyone had thawed out and we all convened at Babs and Dave Hall's for cocktails, conviviality and a sumptuous feast. We can't thank them enough for hosting the ravenous hordes of '51. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Spirit of '51 award to Bill Boynton for his contribution to the class and college over many years. Bill is editing that magnum opus, the 50th reunion year book and, if you haven't ordered yours yet, please do so now. Send your check for $25 to Dave Hall, 3 Downing Rd., Hanover NH 03755.
The next morning, many of us got together for a Sunday Brunch at the River
Valley Club. Those who had forgotten what snow looks like were treated
to a light dusting, which turned into a heavy dusting. This sent
some of your more cowardly classmates to their cars a little earlier than
they had originally anticipated for a slippery start south. Next
year the Executive Committtee decided that the mini should take place a
little earlier in the Fall so that we could see foliage rather than falling
snow.
