CLASS OF 1952

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING 10/16/04

MINUTES

Attending: Messrs Pierce, Fisher, Breed, Ringstad, Montgomery, Logan, McSpadden

The Executive Committee met in the Morrison Commons room of Rockefeller Hall on Saturday at 10:00am. Peter McSpadden convened the meeting and took notes in the absence of the Class Secretary.

Roger Pierce gave the Treasurers report and noted that our financial position was good. We have 397 dues paying members and after expenses a balance of $14,071 in the Ledyard Bank. Major expenses include subscriptions to the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, Class Newsletter costs, and the Class Intern support program.

Roger recommended that dues continue at $50/year and this was passed unanimously. Roger also recommended we continue DAM subscriptions at the current level and not drop anyone from the list. Also approved unanimously.

It was noted by Bill Montgomery, who attended the Class Officers Weekend, that the College will fund only three newsletters per year – this despite general agreement that newsletters were the most effective class communication available. We will appeal this decision through the Alumni Office, but are not optimistic it will change. As a result, we will establish a budget figure for our own newsletter needs.

We are pleased that this year we upgraded our web site and wish to thank Ben Lawwill for his fine work in putting us on line with excitement and elegance. We hope more Classmates will connect with the site on a regular basis. It can be reached through the Dartmouth webpage: http://www.Dartmouth.org/classes/52 . We need to continue to publicize this in our newsletter and other communications to the Class.

The Class had an active year in 2004 – more events, lunches, minis, and comradeship than in recent times. This was applauded and we will try to maintain this level in 2005. It was noted that we have lacked activity in the Boston area, despite the large residency of ‘52’s there. Frank Logan will look into this and recommend possible action.

It was agreed we would explore a Class trip in 2005. Bill Montgomery will organize and we will heat more in the future.

Finally, a suggestion that several classes have held their 55th (gasp) reunion in the Fall of the year, rather than in June. This separates the event from the busy graduation season and may allow for more independent planning. Comments on the idea are most welcome.

At the end of the meeting, we met with four of our 1952 interns. A fine group of young people and an interesting dialogue on their experiences. More publicity on the Intern Program will be forthcoming.

The meeting ended at 12:00 noon and most proceeded to a really poor football game where Dartmouth succeeded in ending Holy Cross’s 17 game losing streak.

Respectfully submitted,

Peter McSpadden,  President
