DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE
CLASS NOTES
November/December 2009

"Though 'round the girdled earth they roam . . ." has been spinning 'round in my head for the past three days. To explain: I had to make a quick trip into N.Y.C. from our summer rental in Sag Harbor, the charming old whaling village located on the East End of Long Island (for the benefit of those not in the know), to receive yet another shot of cortisone into my aching, arthritic left knee. Standing in an elevator in a small medical building on East 34th St. a young woman spots my '54 50th Reunion coffee mug and, smiling broadly, says, "My sister went to Dartmouth -- Class of 1980." Returning her broad smile, I told her how I had recently attended my 55th reunion and asked how her sister had liked attending the College. No sooner had she said "my sister loved Dartmouth" than the man standing next to her, and the only other passenger in this small elevator, extended his hand to me and said, "I'm Harry (?) Class of 1952." Now, the chances of three Dartmouth-connected people taking the same small elevator at the same time are not very great--but are definitely guaranteed to produce three very broad smiles.

A relatively new feature of our bimonthly Class Notes column is the addition of frequent addenda to the online edition. We've mentioned before that our word-limit in this print edition is now set at 350. This fact, coupled with the six-week lead-time from submission to printing, has prompted the editorial decision to add frequent items to this column's online version. With our quarterly newsletter and bimonthly DAM column representing the chief means of communicating class-related news, the online addenda provide a means to rapidly report newsworthy events to all classmates. Simply by going to the '54 Web site and then clicking on the recent Class Notes link you'll be able to stay up-to-date on what's going on with class activities and your classmates. Please let me hear from you via e-mail, phone or snail mail and see your newsworthy item communicated instantly to all classmates -- at least all those who check the '54 Web site on a regular basis.

Addenda:

Please note that the following items represent expanded online addenda to the above Class Notes column that will be appearing in the Nov/Dec 2009 issue of the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. Please check the '54 Web site at least once weekly to see the very latest news of classmates. (E-mail, mail, or call your news to me at any time (akane32@nyc.rr.com. 212-628-2147)

Bob Clements is recovering from recent surgery, and friends and classmates can send their best wishes to him at: 104 Wallacks Point Drive, Stamford, CT 06902. (August 29)

The resumption of the post-summer first-Thursday-of-the-month NY-area luncheon was highlighted by the return of regular attendee Victor Mahler, accompanied by his lovely and most helpful wife, Mimi. Victor suffered a serious stroke last September and with the help of speech and physical therapy continues to make good progress with his rehabilitation. Considering his blindness, Victor is an inspiration to all who know him. Also attending the luncheon were Don Berlin, Dick Davidoff, John Fenn, Art Geller, Tony Kane, Pete Liebman and Arthur Rauch. Pete Barker and Lo-Yi Chan, two other regulars, promise to attend the October 1 get together. (September 9)

Steve Mullins, reporting on a dinner he and Carol had recently with Kay and Tom Tyler in Michigan, says, "they are now proud great-grandparents." Congratulations to Tom and Kay on the birth of great-grandson Christian, born on July 21st to their granddaughter Kate '00, and her husband Eric Walania '98. (Christian Walania '31???). Steve goes on to say that "Kay has to be the best looking great-grandmother anywhere." (Ed. Note: '54 great-grandparents: let me or Pete Barker know who you are!) (September 11)

A message received this morning from Diana Lawrence, Dartmouth's Director of Communications read: “Dartmouth President Jim Yong Kim discussed global health and health care reform  on the September 11 episode of PBS's "Bill Moyers' Journal. Kim, who has dedicated himself to health and social justice work for more than two decades and is a co-founder
of Partners in Health, spoke with Moyers following President Obama's health care  speech to Congress, about his experience delivering health care to some of the  world's poorest populations. You can view the video and a transcript online at http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/09112009/watch2.html” (September 15)
