DARTMOUTH
ALUMNI MAGAZINE '54 Shelly Woolf, no doubt remembered by many classmates as the founder and chief salesman of Woolfie's Whites, a successful white bucks shoe-selling effort during our undergraduate years, has assumed the mantle of Head Agent. For the next five years Shelly will be leading the increasingly important effort to ensure that the Class of 1954 contributes significantly to the annual Dartmouth College Fund drives. For starters Shel's entrepreneurial skills led him to spot an anomaly in the history of class giving that represents a potentially significant target market of its own. He observed that 99 classmates had made a contribution to the Fund in each of the years since graduation. (Full disclosure: Shelly was not in this group of exemplars.) He further found that many classmates had missed only one, two or three years of giving. With the College's endorsement Shelly has established the '54 Set the Record Straight (STRS) program. Classmates will receive letters advising them that if they make a one-time payment for all years missed, approximately equaling the average of their last four non-reunion-year gifts, they'll join the elite group of classmates and be recognized as having a perfect giving record. Shelly also points out that this one-time gift will signal yet another outstanding distinction for the Class of 1954. This gift would be in addition to your 2010 contribution to the DCF. Questions or comments to: swoolf1060@comcast.net or call 508-362-3522. And, yes, Shelly is a charter member of the new '54 STRS program, as is your Class Notes editor. As you'll no doubt note, the DAM no longer runs obituaries in the back of the magazine, enabling the publication of smaller issues, which will thereby result in "significant savings on printing and mailing costs." Obituaries will now be featured on the new DAM Web site. Mini-reunion co-chairs Jay Davis and Steve Mullins have been hard at work planning a number of important '54 get-togethers. At this writing an early May trip to Washington, D.C. is planned. Check the '54 Web site for exact dates. A fall mini is planned for Hanover from October 7-10 and will include the annual Executive Committee meeting. Peak fall foliage is promised for that weekend.
MARCH/APRIL CLASS NOTES ADDENDA
Mini co-chairs Mullins and Davis have locked in stone their first mini: Washington, DC, May 9-12. Mark your calendars and await further details.(January 11)
Jay Davis writes: "For the 12th consecutive year, an intrepid group of '54 skiers and two wives met at Mt. Snow on a very cold early January weekend to enjoy the camaraderie of the group and some alpine sliding. Anne and Dana Low, Ellen and Dick Gorsey, Dick Pearl, Ned Freedman, Tom Tyler and Jay Davis made up the group this year. Two outstanding dinners and an après-ski event at Ned's ski house warmed the group up after near zero wind chill temps. The group made a pact that no resignations would be accepted until their 80th year has been passed. (January 11)
Word has been received of the death of classmate Tom Campbell on December 15, after a brief illness. Notes of sympathy and condolences can be sent to Tom's wife, Pat, at 245 West Midway Blvd., Broomfield, CO 80020. (January 13)
You've received a copy of President Kim's message about contributing to the Haiti relief effort through Partners in Health, the organization he co-founded with Dr. Paul Farmer. Dr. Kim writes, "As John Sloan Dickey said, the world's troubles are our troubles and right now, Haiti's troubles are as horrific as anything I have witnessed. Let's show the world that Dartmouth will step up when people are truly in need." Enough said. If you haven't contributed as yet, copy and paste the following link: https://donate.pih.org/page/contribute/haiti_earthquake?source=earthquake&subsource=taf (January 15)
In response to the appeal for funds to aid the Haitian people, the Class of '54 has stepped up the plate. President Don Berlin reports: "Peter Kenyon (chair of Special Projects committee) proposed that since the Partners in Health internship will not come into being until at least this summer that we donate the $3,000 in our budget for the internship to PIH to support the organization's efforts in Haiti. I seconded the suggestion and asked the Executive Committee to vote by e-mail. The motion was approved by a vote of 29-2." '54 Treasurer Jim Tofias will be sending a check this week, and Don will be advising Dr. Kim of the Class's donation. At the same time, many of us are continuing to make our own personal contributions. Don concluded by saying "the Class of 1954 can be proud of its efforts." (January 25)
Sadly, we report the death of John Heston early this morning, at Kendal in Hanover. Funeral arrangements are still uncertain, but a celebration of John's life will be held in the spring. Notes of condolence can be sent to Betty at 15 Berrill Farms Lane, Hanover, NH 03755 or bjheston@valley.net. Obituary will be posted in the near future. (March 2)
