Executive Committee/Class Meeting

Minutes

Friday, October 23, 2009

President Don Berlin called the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m.

The following twenty-five members of the class were in attendance: Bob Adnopoz, Walter Anderson, Dick Barker, Don Berlin, Jay Chandler, Jay Davis, Ron Dougherty, Bob Dean, John Fenn, John Gillespie,  Jerry Goldstein, Bill Grover, Rick Hartman, Peter Kenyon, Dana Low, Steve Mullins, Bob Osmond, Dick Page, Dave Ransom, Harry Robinson, Jim Tofias, Dick Trowbridge, Norm Veasey, Wayne Weil and Shelly Woolf.

Secretary’s Report

In the absence of Secretary Tony Kane, Don Berlin asked Rick Hartman to assume the position of Acting Secretary for the duration of the meeting. Minutes of the 2008 Executive Committee meeting had been emailed to all members. There being no corrections or additions, the minutes of the 2008 meeting were approved unanimously.

The names of the eight classmates who had died since our last executive committee meeting were read followed by a moment of silence in their memory: Don Austerman, Len Beller, Neal Citron, Dick Jennison, Paul Mackey, John Musa, Henry Willard and Herb Wilson.

Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer Jim Tofias presented the financial report for FY2009 showing net class resources as of June 30, 2009 amounting to $40,473 compared to $32,448 as of June 30, 2008. Major factors contributing to this increase were positive results from Homecoming 2008 and our 55th Reunion, an increase in class dues from $50 to $60, and a decrease in newsletter expenses reflecting distribution by email. A motion was made, seconded and unanimously approved to hold in reserve for our 60th Reunion approximately $1,600 of surplus funds from the 55th Reunion. Jim also noted that 66% of our classmates were dues payers while only 37% contributed to intern projects and that both dues contributions and dues payers have remained fairly constant over the past four years. Jim suggested that class funds should be invested in instruments other than Certificates of Deposit and will develop a proposal for alternative investments for consideration by the Executive Committee.

Don Berlin presented the enclosed Class Budget for FY 2010 amounting to $30, 930. Don noted that the budget provides for an increase from $1,000 to $2,000 in our Athletic Sponsorship support and an increase from four to five Internships reflecting a possible internship with Partners in Health in support of our new college president Jim Kim. Following discussion, the budget was unanimously approved.

President’s Report

Don reported that the class raised $584,039 for the 2009 Dartmouth College Fund, surpassing our goal of $550,000 and representing the third largest amount raised for a 55th reunion gift. Our participation was 86%, a 55th reunion record and higher than any other Dartmouth class during this year’s campaign. Of equal importance was the creation of the first Class of 1954 Memorial Scholarship that has been awarded to Nicholas L. Edwards, Class of 2010. Twenty-three 1954 widows helped establish this $25,000 scholarship in memory of their husbands. They and future 1954 widows will be encouraged to perpetuate this scholarship in future years. In addition, individual $25,000 scholarships were donated in the name of certain of our classmates who endowed them and the class created another ten $25,000 scholarships that will be known as Class of 1954 Scholarships. The College has named Nicole M. Williamson and Hyoung Cheol, both of the Class of 2010, to receive two of these 1954 Scholarships.  This was truly an outstanding achievement by the Class of 1954. In the future, classmates will be encouraged to expand the Memorial Scholarship by making donations over and above their annual gifts to the Dartmouth College Fund. Classmates were also reminded that the next meeting of the Executive Committee is scheduled for October 8, 2010 when we will hold a class meeting on a non-homecoming weekend. Don concluded his remarks by complementing Perry Davis on the outstanding work he is doing for the class web site and asked for back-up recommendations should Perry need some assistance in the future.

Head Agent’s Report

Head Agent Shelly Woolf recommended that the class accept a goal of $215,000 with 86% participation for the 2009-2010 Dartmouth College Fund. The recommendation was approved unanimously. The following classmates have agreed to serve as class agents: Dick Barker, Don Belcher, Don Berlin, Bob Berry, Jay Davis, Bob Dean, Jay Davis, Paul Dabney, Mort Galper, Bill Garland, Ron Gold, Jerry Goldstein, Alec Gray, Rick Hartman, Phil Kaiser, Tony Kane, Pete Kenyon, Dick Lewis, Dave Mandelbaum, Dave Martin, John Moran, Steve Mullins, Bill Murane, Bob Osmond, Dick Page, Norm Veasey and Shelly Woolf.

Shelly reported that 97 members of our class have never missed a year of giving to the Dartmouth College Fund in the 55 years since graduation and suggested that those classmates who have missed only a few years might want to “set the record straight”  by making up those missed years with an additional gift to the College. This idea was unanimously approved by the Executive Committee and Shelly was asked to put together a program for further discussion.
