Roy "Rip" Riddell Coffin, Jr. Roy "Rip" Riddell Coffin, Jr. died on September 10 at home in Chevy Chase, MD, of esophageal cancer. Born and brought up in Merion, PA, Rip graduated from the Haverford School, where he participated in the glee club, acted, wrote for the school newspaper and excelled in swimming. At Dartmouth, Rip majored in Government, was a member of Zeta Psi, the Dartmouth Outing Club, Players, N.R.O.T.C. and a was record-setting backstroke swimmer and also a diver. After a tour of duty to the Orient while in the Navy, and then receiving an MBA from the University of Michigan in 1959, Rip joined the Atomic Energy Commission as a budget analyst and held various positions there and with other government agencies. Changing careers, Rip became an ordained Episcopal minister, receiving a Master of Divinity degree in 1977 and a Doctor of Ministry in 1988. From 1978 to 1984, Rip served as an interim pastor for 10 congregations within the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, Maryland and Virginia. He helped start a professional association of practitioners of interim ministry, a journey that he considered the "defining moment of my professional life." Post-retirement in 1994, Rip founded a consulting practice to help non-profits in managing transitions. Rip is survived by Carol, his wife of 45 years, daughters Debbie and Denise, and four grandchildren. Another daughter, Cindy, predeceased Rip just months before his own death. |
