Robert O. Collins
Robert O. Collins
died at his home in Santa Barbara, California
on April 11, 2008, of cancer after a short illness. Having grown up in Waukegan,
Illinois, Bob majored in History at Dartmouth, earning a Phi Beta Kappa key and
selection as a Rufus Choate Scholar. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity
ant the Outing and Mountaineering clubs. "In a career devoted to the study of
Africa's Upper Nile Valley, particularly Sudan, historian Robert O. Collins
wrote books and articles that were considered required reading for scholars and
students of Africa," according to Bob's obituary in the Los Angeles Times
(http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-collins25apr25,1,3928959.story).
"In addition to his Dartmouth bachelor's
Degree, Bob earned
other history bachelor's and master's degrees from Oxford University's Balliol
College in 1956 and 1960, as well as a master's degree and doctorate from Yale
University in 1959. He was fluent in Arabic," the LA Times went on to
say. After teaching at Williams College and Columbia University, Bob joined the
faculty of UC Santa Barbara in 1965, and for ten years served as dean of the
graduate division. Bob is survived by his daughter Catharine Kristian, his two
sons, Randolph of Healdsburg, California, and Robert Ware Collins of San Jose,
two brothers and five grandchildren.
