Jay G. Engel, Jr.

Jay G. Engel, Jr. of Framingham, MA, died at his home on November 11 after a two-year battle with a rare blood disease. Jay entered Dartmouth from his hometown of Baltimore, MD, where he attended Baltimore City College. An English major at Dartmouth, Jay was a member of Sigma Phi and active in the Dartmouth Christian Union, the Players, the Outing Club and the Philosophy Club. After college, Jay earned an MA in teaching from Harvard and then spent two years living in Europe. After pursuing but not completing his Ph.D at Columbia, Jay joined the faculty of the St. Mark's School in Southborough, MA, and began a 42-year career as an English teacher. He was a great lover of the arts and enriched students' lives, as well as his own, by developing a visiting lecture series at St. Mark's, attracting eminent American poets, musicians and writers. In Jay's later years, he became a professional storyteller and developed a course called "The Art of Storytelling," with classes held in the comfort of his home. His St. Mark's obituary said of Jay: "His strong belief in experiencing ‘all you can' was a guiding principle he fostered not only in himself, but everyone who came in contact with him."  Jay is survived by Diane, his wife of 42 years, and their children, Eric, Karen and Sarah, and three grandchildren.
