William Burke Sherman

William Burke Sherman (Col., USAF-Ret) died January 18, in Annandale, VA, after a year's battle with lung cancer. Bill was born in Royal Oak Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, spent his early years in suburban Cleveland and then moved to the New Haven area and attended Hamden High School, graduating with honors and starring in football, basketball and baseball. During his senior year, Bill was named All-State end in football. At Dartmouth, Bill was a member of Sigma Chi and The Tabard. He played freshman football, basketball and baseball and became an important member of the varsity basketball team for three years. Earning an Air Force commission through the A.F.R.O.T.C., Bill graduated from pilot training in 1956 and was assigned as a SA-16 pilot at Hickam AFB, Hawaii. In 1956, he was reassigned to fly SA-16s with the 31st Air Rescue Squadron at Clark AB, Philippine Islands. Bill's distinguished military career continued for thirty years, including a stint in Southeast Asia, where he flew in support of US Army Special Forces, earning a Bronze Star and Air Medal with 12 Oak Leaf Clusters.  In 1965, Bill was awarded a Master's Degree in Business Administration through the George Washington University off-duty education program. Bill was married in 1958, and he and Nancy proceeded to have three children and six grandchildren. After he retired in 1985, Bill worked as a bus driver for the Fairfax County School System (VA) for eight years and enjoyed passing on to the students the same regard for respect and manners that he had learned in the Air Force. Bill spent his final years living in Annandale and enjoying the Florida sunshine and his grandchildren. Nancy, his wife of 48 years, and their children, William, Susan and Karen, and six grandchildren survive him.

Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors on Monday, March 5, 2007 at 11 a.m. Please assemble at the Administration Building at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's name to St. Jude Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38105.
