Stewart P. Stearns, Jr. died of Parkinson's Disease on October 12 in Gansevoort, NY.   Stew was born in Dobbs Ferry, NY, the son of Stewart P. Stearns ‘26 and Louise Dutcher Stearns.  He grew up in Schenectady and attended Nott Terrace High School.  At Dartmouth, Stew majored in history, played varsity tennis and squash, and was a member of Beta Theta Pi.  In 1958, he earned a Masters Degree in Education from Boston University.  He served in the United States Army Counter Intelligence Corps from 1954 until 1957. In 1958, Stew married Christina Dickey, daughter of Dartmouth President John Sloan Dickey, and began a teaching career in South Glens Falls, NY, teaching social studies in the Junior High School until 1974, when he became the Tennis Director and General Partner of the Queensbury Racquet Club.  During the summers he worked as a tennis professional in Portland, Maine, Hanover, NH, and at the Glens Falls Tennis and Swim Club. He was member of the United States Professional Tennis Association. Stew had a long successful career as a high school tennis coach at South Glens Falls and later at Queensbury. His South Glens Falls teams were the Northern Conference champions from 1960-1967.  From 1966-1973 he was active in the NYSPHSAA as Section II Tennis Chairman and as State Tennis Chairman.  In addition to his lifelong involvement with tennis, Stew was an enthusiastic skier and hiker, Christmas tree farmer, and an amateur maple syrup maker. . He is survived by his wife Tina; his daughter Chrissie Stearns Drescher '87 and her husband Michael Drescher ‘87, of Hinesburg, Vermont; and his daughter Sarah Stearns ‘90 of Thetford Vermont.
