56 out...one mo’ time

Don’t let triskaidekaphobia keep you from this year’s Cafe Baci Italian Feast--that now famous gourmet treat with a special ‘56 fellowship flourish. For those of you who have somehow missed this annual Southwest Florida event of the social season, let your hair down and come celebrate Spring with the ‘56 locals as the Baci Blast turns 13!

Circle Sunday, March 21 at 6 pm on your new decade calendar. Same classy hideaway locale: Upstairs in the back room at Cafe Baci, 4100 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Cash bar for starters. Next select the elegant meal of your choice from Baci’s extensive yummy Italian menu. Receive your very own separate check.

The evening’s appetizers and dessert are on the house. The latter: a lemon torte that a Bay Village OH grandmama invented, served with homemade limoncello that our very own Martha BRIDGE has squeezed up.

Entertainment? Gordi LENCI and 3--barbershop at its finest--will make a return musical visit. Just the best. Be there.

Our founder and head cheerleader, Tony BRUSCINO, promises the very topnotch in food, company and cheer. To sign up, ring up one of Tony’s two lieutenants: LENCI @ 941.383.4799; BREMBLE @ 941.228.2919. We already have a full complement of loyal locals. Let’s hear from the seasonal types planning to warm themselves in SW FL come March. Celebrate Spring Italian style. -Ted

Roger Schumacher May 20, 2010: a Turkey Trip

Our next "While we're still young" trip is called "Turkey's Magical Hideaways", and there's room for only one more couple.  It's a 17 day Overseas Adventure Travel trip that starts in Istanbul, heads inland for Cappadocia, turns south to Antalya and the Med where we cruise on a Gullet-style yacht for 4 days then on to Kusidasi and Ephesus (a place you don't want to miss) before leaving for home from Izmir.
Only 14 can go on this trip and I have reserved all on the May 20, 2010 departure. The trip leaves Thurs 5/20/10 and returns Weds 6/3/10. The cost from NY or Newark is $3,395 + 152.77 tx,etc. = $3,547.77 less any credits you may have.. From Boston, Chicago or Detroit add $100.  Insurance, if you want it, is $380/p more.  A $500 deposit at time of booking is required. Any rebate received, will be shared as usual. Dinner at a restaurant that Buddy Schattman knows in Istanbul might be something we could do (as we did in Buenos Aires, New Zealand and Hong Kong).
As of today 11 have said they will go - the Allens, Shattmans, Doug Keares, Don Keares, Kathy (Doug's sister), Sherrie and I. Since there's room for only one more couple, the next person to contact me will close out the trip. Try something different while you still can. If you're interested or want more info, call me on my cell at 609 456-7761.

CLASS OF 1956 MINI REUNION SUN VALLEY, IDAHO OCTOBER 9-11, 2010

From Jack BILLHARDT (jbillhardt@earthlink.net):

Les REID and Jack BILLHARDT – ably assisted and supported by Jack CROWLEY - invite you to join them, and several already interested/ and or committed classmates * , to a very informal mini class reunion in October 2010. Sun Valley is a world class resort area with lots of outdoor
activities (golf, hiking, fishing), numerous scenic local drives, and a multitude of excellent
galleries and restaurants. It is also just great for relaxing and seeing the world from a different
perspective.

The “ Trailing of the Sheep “ festival, a truly unique event, will be held on the same weekend.
Early October weather is generally sunny, still warm with cool nights. Les and Jack spend most of the summer/fall there. Jack Crowley is a frequent visitor and has offered his assistance, so there will be three local guides/hosts available to show you the sights and answer your questions.

This will be more informal than most mini-reunions in that it is not in or near a major metropolitan area and there will be a limited set schedule of events, and no bus tours etc. Just “ time for what you want to do “ with planned cocktail/dinner get togethers and spontaneous small group activities.

It should also be noted that you may want to come earlier or stay later so as to make the trip more worth while. In that case we can also recommend some wonderful drives in and out of Sun Valley from the states of Washington, Oregon, Montana, Utah or Wyoming. Further details will be forthcoming regarding lodging opportunities, but at that time of year places to stay will not be a problem. Flying in can be a bit more of a problem but there are lots of flights into Salt Lake ( 4 hours away by car ) and Boise ( 2 ∏ hours ). There is also regional service from Salt Lake – the price of which is included in Delta flights.

Lastly, please do not hesitate to contact Les (lamer@mindspring.com; 253-756-5460) or Jack B.(jbillhardt@earthlink.net; 203-966-5147) at any time for additional information The three of us love Sun Valley and there is nothing more fun than sharing a place you love with friends.

* Estelle and Les REID, Pat and Jack BILLHARDT, Beth and Jack CROWLEY, Ann and Tag CHAPMAN, Lyn and Bob SLATER, Carolyn and Glen FRENCH, and Ann and Clem MALIN.
