Class Notes April 2004

JAY EMERY, our invaluable Class treasurer since circa 1985, has stepped down from the post for health reasons and has been replaced by BILL MOORMAN. In a letter to the class, 1960 president RICK ROESCH paid tribute to Jay for being the glue that held the class together, far beyond keeping the books in order..

"After moving to Hanover to work with the College, Jay became the touch point for classmates passing through as well as those who came and stayed," said Rick. "His advice to legacy applicants has been as accurate and appreciated as his reports on snow conditions. Always full of ideas, Jay was the origin of our monthly Class lunch in Norwich, an idea that has now taken root on the left coast as well."

Jay will assist Bill in the transition, and we also now have a Class mailbox: Dartmouth Class of 1960, P.O. Box 866, Hanover, NH 03755-0866. All of us, of course, will wish Jay and his wife, Wendy, well. As Rick remarked in his letter, "As in a favorite Dartmouth melody, there are 'no words to bear the burden of our praise' for all that Jay has done for our Class."

Jay was among those classmates and their spouses joining Rick and DUDLEY SMITH recently to feast on pheasants shot by Rick and Dudley on a recent hunt in the snow near Aberdeen, S.D. Also present at the dinner were DENNY GOODMAN, JIM ADLER and DUD WEIDER. Rick's self-effacing view of the South Dakota hunt, in which Dudley's son, Brad, his dog, and even a member of the Class of 1959, Jim Lust, joined was couched in these terms: "Dudley shot most of the birds. I would shoot at the same time and quickly yell, 'I got him.'"

BOB FARMER, the treasurer of several Democratic presidential campaigns, and this year with the KERRY campaign, was in exuberant spirits as this was written. He e-mailed me, "Ever since the Iowa caucuses, I've been traveling to different states on behalf of John Kerry. I'm too damn old for this but it's exciting and I believe that the country will be well served if we return 'W' to Texas. I'm working out of DC but get home to Miami on weekends. Bring it on."

I promise equal time to those who inform me they're working for the Bush, Nader or any other presidential campaigns. Bring it on.

GEORGE LIEBMANN informs us that in February his book, "Neighborhood Futures, Citizens Rights and Local Control" has been published with a new introduction. George, a former U.S. Senate candidate, is a partner in a Baltimore law firm.

MARTY LOWER was reached in February in his winter vacation place at Naples, Fla., saying he had been golfing and enjoying visits from his children. A nice winter to be away from his textile business in the cold Northeast.

For your calendars, our annual fall reunion will be held in Hanover this year from Oct. 8 through 10, and our 45th gala reunion in Hanover, June 13-16, 2005
