French Canals

Barbie and I have taken two one week barge trips in France during the past three years with two other couples and thoroughly enjoyed both.  They were arranged through Frontiers Travel and I'll list our first rate contact below.  .

Our trips were the Burgundy Canal out of Dijon and the Canal du Midi in SE France.  They are one week trips normally for 3-4 couples who you put together.  The Canal environment as opposed to rivers allows people to get on and off the barge at will and parallel it by foot or bike as you go.  The barges are also accompanied by a van and a typical day includes a 3-4 hour sightseeing trip away from the barge.  The barge staffs in our cases have been five star as has the food.  The barges are very comfortable and each couple has a stateroom, private shower, etc.  Our trip this year had bad weather and we still had a great time.

If you have sufficient time, we have tacked onto our trips visits to the Cote d'Azur, Provence, and Normany.  Frontiers arranged a guide for us in Normany who will be a life long friend:  Maj. Gen. Graham Hollands, British Army retired  Sandhurst 1963.

Jill Jergel@frontierstravel.com (tel: 800 245-1950)  and her team put everything together for us and did a 100% job.  They have detailed brochures on barge travel throughout Europe which she can send you.  Costs are a little over $1,000/day/couple.  Jill has our 5 star endorsement.
I'd be happy to elaborate for anyone who is interested (425 455-0455)
