Desert Ecology Field Trip in Arizona


March 30 - April 8, 2004

Eight days of field time in Arizona, in locations ranging from the Sonoran Desert of the southern slopes to the Grand Canyon of the northern plateau country.

Emphasis on:

  1. Desert adaptations of the vegetation and wildlife.
  2. Gaining familiarity with western wildflower, tree, and bird species.
  3. Recognizing and understanding changes in plant and animal life with elevation. The trip covers a span of more than 8000 feet and ten distinctive vegetation zones.
  4. Geologic diversity, with the opportunity to compare the Basin and Range region in southern Arizona with the Colorado Plateau of the north.
  5. A close look at western volcanic history and the igneous rocks of several volcanic regions.
  6. Excellent opportunities for western birding in the great variety of habitats we will visit (2001 trip total:140 species).
  7. Day at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.
  8. Visit five National Parks and Monuments.
  9. Good food and socializing.

Group will meet at and depart from Phoenix Airport (air fare not included above). Group size limited to 12. Deposit of $200 due December 30/ balance Feb. 1
