March 25, 2009 Jim Adler letter
Since several guys have asked for input on the Association of Alumni election that starts today and ends May 6th, here are my quick thoughts; - This is a MUCH less contentious election than in recent years - thank goodness! - but it's still important to vote. Paper ballots are in the mail and if the College has your email address you'll get an electronic ballot shortly. Vote either way it'll only take a minute or two. - STRONGLY SUGGEST VOTING "YES" ON THE PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO CHANGE THE WAY WE ELECT ALUMNI TRUSTEES AND ASSOCIATION OFFICERS. The new system is simpler, clearer and fairer. It provides: * Head-to-head races If the amendment passes, the Association's central role in elections will be reclaimed (the College and Trustees now run things). AMAZING, THERE IS NO, REPEAT NO, APPARENT OPPOSITION FROM ANY GROUP OR INDIVIDUAL ON THIS VOTE. IT WOULD SEEM, THEN, THAT THIS IS SOMETHING WE CALL ALL AGREE ON! BUT PASSAGE REQUIRES A 2/3 SUPER MAJORITY - SO PLEASE VOTE "YES." - ALSO SUGGEST VOTING "YES" TO RE-ELECT JOHN MATHIAS AND THE "UNITY SLATE." They're running unopposed, but a "YES" vote will show support for their having ended the lawsuit and for their having entered into a spirited dialogue with the Trustees to explore ways we might increase Alumni Trustee representation on the Board. Note: There is no election for Alumni Trustees this year. One is expected in 2010. For further information, you can go to voxthevote.org or dartmouthundying.org. Also, please feel free to email me back with any questions you may have. Thanks for your time. Happy spring. Jim
