President's Letter August 2007 August 2007 Since my last letter to the class in April, I want to share some good news about our class and its support of the college. The college sent me the June 10th commencement bulletin with a green tasseled book mark in the center. The bookmark reads as follows, “Dartmouth College announces the graduation of Daniel G. Peebles. Thank you for making the Dartmouth Experience possible through the Class of 1960 Scholarship Fund.” Our class can be proud that our Scholarship Fund has the finances to support four students or one person in each Dartmouth class. You will learn more about our scholars at our class meeting on Saturday morning at 9:00 A.M. in 101 Fairchild on October 20th. Please note that this is a change from last year. Fairchild is just north of Wilder and Steele and is accessible from the stairs and ramp off Observatory Hill. Dan Peebles was our senior class scholar last year. Kristen L. Lurie `08 is now our senior class scholarship recipient. Sylvia C. Ferreira is our junior year class scholar. Trent E. Carden `10 is our sophomore scholar. Bob Kenerson, our class scholar coordinator, will be in contact with the college for the name of our new first year (the word freshman is no longer used) scholar. For your information, the book value of our fund is now at $220,221.55. In the past each $50,000 in value allowed us to have a named scholar. That figure has grown to $100,000. Therefore, for our class to have a 5th named scholar our scholarship fund must grow to $300,000. We have two class projects that keep falling short of the donations needed to fund them. We sponsor Dorm Art at a cost of $4,000. Each year we sponsor an athlete to visit the campus at a cost of $1,100. Bill Moorman will have specific details at our class meeting. Bill will also be presenting a proposal to raise our class dues to $50 per year. Most classes in our peer group are higher than $50 with a few charging dues at the same number as their class year. For example, the class of 1962 may have class dues set at $62 per year. Our sponsored athlete is a baseball player. Roger Schaefer and John Goyette hope to have additional details at our class meeting on Saturday morning. Many of you are aware that our first attempt to contact classmates via our List Serve suffered a severe “glitch.” We were polling the class to determine who would like to receive our class newsletter via e-mail or by regular mail. To the surprise of our Web Master, Walt Daniels, everyone received everyone else’s replies. That has been corrected. However, despite the “glitch” we garnered enough data to determine that there would be no cost saving in sending our newsletter electronically to those who preferred that medium. Instead, Walter posts the newsletter on our class web site. Then, he sends an e-mail to everyone on our List Serve to advise classmates that the latest newsletter is available for review through a link on our web site. The advantage of viewing the newsletter on-line is the ability to enjoy the color and clarity of the photographs that accompany the written word. John Goyette is our new mini-reunion chairperson. He has done an outstanding job in arranging events for our enjoyment at Homecoming. We begin with a cocktail reception from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. in the atrium at the new MacLean Engineering Sciences Center. According to John, “No one will go away hungry.” Barry MacLean plans to have a 1921 Milburn electric car on display during the festivities. John has also arranged for transportation from the atrium to the starting point of the Homecoming parade. Saturday kicks off with our class meeting in 101 Fairchild. We will receive reports from our class officers; hear from our class scholars and, hopefully, from our sponsored athlete. Bill Gould and others involved in the program will brief us on SEAD (Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth). I will ask Denny Goodman to give us an update on the comments from winners in our Dorm Art project. I will also ask class residents of the Upper Valley and environs to share the accomplishments of our 2010/1960 connection. Gene Kohn and Dick Foley will give us an update on the events and activities planned in Boston for our common 70th birthday party from June 12 to June15, 2008. Following our class meeting we will have our usual hearty tailgate lunch organized by John Goyette with help from Rick Roesch (tent master), Roger Hanlon (table set-up), Julie Smith (food organizer), Jim Adler (grill master), and Margie Long (assistant grill master). A change this year - we have asked everyone to pay in advance for the tailgate at $10.00 per family. The football game versus Columbia kicks off at 12:30 P.M. Those not interested in football can join Ann and Roger Hanlon for a nature hike or take a guided tour through the Hood Museum. We conclude the day with dinner in the Webster Room of the Hanover Inn. John Goyette has made arrangements for your entrée selection as noted on the registration form. There is a choice of meat, fish, or a vegetarian plate featuring a stuffed Portobello mushroom. Please complete the attached form and mail it with your payment to Bill Moorman, Class of 1960, P.O. Box 6055, Jefferson City, MO. 65102-6605. You will be receiving a copy of the same form in the August class newsletter. See you in October. With best regards, Ken
