President's Letter Fall 2002

Dear Fellow 1960’s and Special Others.

You’ll read more about our October 11-14 (date change October 3-5) mini-reunion in Denny Goodman’s newsletter and in Ken Reich’s column in the Alumni Magazine, but a few comments as background for planning next year’s autumnal gathering. First, the overall turnout was a record and we really enjoyed seeing some folks who hadn’t been around for some time. Judging by attendance, adding the Friday afternoon ‘59’60’61 symposium built around the Orozco Exhibition at the Hood Museum was a popular lengthening of the weekend. The Class gathering for nourishment Friday evening was a relaxed social event without the need to rush off to the Homecoming parade. Our Class Meeting Saturday morning overflowed even our new larger meeting spot in Fairchild Hall - and after hearing nine students (our four class scholars, two dorm art awardees, two SEAD program mentors and our class athlete) recount their amazing Dartmouth experiences, one tongue-in-cheek G. Kohn commented to the moist-eyed crowd that it was disappointing to see how inarticulate and uninvolved our students were! The Hanlons and Lymans again organized a sumptuous tailgate lunch followed by hiking options to game attendance. Our usual Class dinner at Quechee was even better than usual and the joint brunch on Sunday morning preluded more hiking and social gatherings. Net, moving our mini-reunion to an earlier date, away from Homecoming, was a success! And none complained about missing the bonfire (which took place amid flurries this year, with the Hanover police reporting a number of injuries from circling freshmen slipping on frozen ground).

The issue naturally arose about when to gather next Fall. The mood was definitely in favor of an earlier date than Homecoming (scheduled for the last weekend in October) to enjoy better weather, more student availability, fewer crowds for rooms etc. There was also a desire to avoid Columbus Day weekend, which was a traffic nightmare for those driving from New York and Boston. Continuing to have some joint activities with our neighboring classes was encouraged provided we kept Saturday activities exclusive to our Class. With all this input, we’ve decided on the weekend of October 3-5 for our 2003 autumn mini-reunion (home game - Penn). Please mark your new calendars as soon as you get them. The classes of ‘59 and ‘61 are also planning to reune that weekend and under consideration is a symposium built around the book all freshmen are required to read before arrival (this year it was Milton Fri edman’s “Free to Choose”, 2003 title tbd) with a student panel giving us their perspective supplemented by appropriate classmates.

Other than that, make sure you’ve got our 65th Birthday Party baked into your 2003 plans for June 5 to 8, certain to be our best celebration ever! More coming from our Chicago colleagues shortly. Send your Class dues in to Jay and add something for our scholarship, dorm art and athletic sponsorship programs. Be generous when Ken Johansen and his DCF helpers call for your annu al donation. And have a wonderful Holiday Season!
