President's Letter November 2004Dear Classmates and Special Others, With our Fall Festivities behind us (great events plus another record for Mini-reunion attendance!) and our Fantastic 45th Reunion coming as we round the corner into the New Year (June 13-16), just a few Class matters for your information. First, we’ve discussed in several fora the timing of our Fall 2005 Mini-reunion, specifically whether we should stick with our practice of the last four years and gather on the weekend of the first home Ivy football game in October (Penn on 10/1/05) or revert to gathering on Homecoming weekend later in the month (Columbia on 10/22/05). The strong sentiment was to stick with the earlier date when the weather is better for outdoor activities and the campus less crowded; but the real deal-clincher was the fact that Mini-reunion Chair Roger Hanlon was able to secure the stately Daniel Webster room in the Hanover Inn for our Class dinner for the earlier date, whereas all good venues large enough for our Class were spoken for on the later date. So October 1, 2005 should go on your new calendar! Come see the lovely campus again while the grass is still green and most leaves still on the trees and maybe even bring your bathing suit! Details and sign-up for the weekend will be mailed out next Summer. Homecoming advocate John Goyette, with the kind assistance of the Adlers, organized a cheerful presence for the parade this year and will hopefully do the same next year. Next, the highlight of our Class meeting on Mini-reunion weekend is the chance to meet some of the students we support. This year we were joined by two of our dorm art awardees, Bill Gould’s mentors in the SEAD program, our effervescent woman’s hockey team member and several scholarship fund recipients (classes and off-campus activities prevent all the students from joining). Hearing from these abundantly-talented future leaders (who each somehow manage to fit into their schedules what it took a whole floor of Russell Sage to accomplish in our days) brings moisture to many eyes and confirms the value of the funds we provide. Our largest program is our four scholarships, one for a member of each class in perpetuity; the details on that fund and information on our current scholars, including Brenda who graduated last June, are enclosed with this letter to give those of you who were unable to be at the Class meeting a feel for these outstanding students. Finally, at our 45th Reunion we will elect our Class Officers for the following five years. Jim Adler, our most recent past President, has convened our Nominating Committee (made up of all our past post-graduation Presidents who wish to participate). Their slate, to be formally voted on at our Class Meeting during Reunion, is as follows: President: Ken Johansen. As Head Agent for the Class for the past ten years (and leadership agent for many years before) Ken has led us to numerous giving records and awards, both in terms of dollars and participation, culminating this year in 1960 receiving the Dartmouth College Fund Committee Award for the best all-around achievement, the top award given. This success has contributed strongly to our being recognized as a Class that cares and is listened to on the campus. Ken’s leadership and hard work have brought him into direct contact with a broad cross-section of the Class and given him a good understanding of the Class’s interests and priorities. Head Agent: Bruce Hasenkamp. As de facto leader of our Left Coast contingent, Bruce has been involved in organizing almost all of our Class activities there, ranging from our great 60th Birthday Party in San Francisco (kudos to many on that one!) to the quarterly Class lunches at the SF University Club with many smaller events between. Bruce has been a very successful lead agent for the DCF for many years, not surprising given his equally successful professional career before retiring. Our Class is indeed fortunate to have both continuity and extraordinary competence in our other critical positions. Ken Reich has agreed to continue as Class Secretary, Bill Moorman as Treasurer, Denny Goodman as Newsletter Editor, Dudley Smith as Bequest Chairman, Roger Hanlon as Mini-Reunion Chair and Walter Daniels as Webmaster. All of these Classmates have won awards for the excellence of their work at various times from the College, and they are each an important part of what makes 1960 such an exceptional Class! In closing, it goes without saying that none of our Class activities would happen without the participation and support of the limitless numbers of Classmates (and their Special Others) who pitch in to organize events, offer creative ideas and help implement them, reach out to bring more of our Classmates to our celebrations, etc, etc. Its a real team effort - and what a team it is! Happy Holidays! Rick Roesch, President |
