Bill
Hutton is moving rapidly forward on our 60th Birthday Party/San Francisco Reunion, May
13-16, 1999. Hes reserved blocks of rooms at six hotels, each of which falls into
the "boutique" category and is but a short walk from Union Square. Guaranteed
group rates will range from $139 to $189 per night (plus the 14 percent tourist tax). The
six: The Stanford Court, Cartwright (524 Sutter St.), Galleria Park (191 Sutter St.),
Handlery Union Square (351 Geary St.), Canterbury (750 Sutter St.), and the Clarion
Bedford. Reserve early because the annual Bay-to-Breakers race is scheduled for Sunday,
May 16. Bill promises to have complete hotel information to us shortly. I found the four
with addresses on the web.
"The activities schedule is still in gestation, but will likely include a Saturday
night dinner dance on the Spirit of San Francisco and a Napa Valley wine tour on Friday.
Bay-to-Breakers registration will be made available to those who want to prove
theyre not really 60, and we shall probably conclude with a brunch following the
race," Bill said.
Make your plans now. He said it should be relatively simple to extend the reservation on
either end, for those who want to make it a full vacation.
Bill Blue writes that he is the General Manager of The Golf Center at Palm Desert,
a combination 9 hole golf course and driving range with excellent teaching programs,
especially for juniors, and concurrently is co-chairman of the Junior Golf Foundation of
the Desert.
"We have developed an innovative junior instruction program where we take equipment
and instructors to schools and teach as part of the P.E. program - especially to the huge
minority
population in a valley with 90 golf courses. Our targets are ages 7-12. The juniors have a
variety of individual instruction programs available to improve their game around the
Coachella Valley at golf facilities. It follows the inner city golf program developed
while I was Commissioner of the LPGA in the late 80's and has tremendous national
potential...It makes those of us involved in junior golf feel good about our
time invested."
More from the fall minireunion: Denny Denniston is still in banking in New York
City. His oldest son Tom is a freshman "and loves it. Tom and I sailed across the
Coral Sea in September and then scuba dove on the Great Barrier Reef for several
days."
Jim and Carol Baum report: "Weve sold or closed some of our stores in
Illinois so were down to just two both in Morris a Hallmark Gold Crown
Store and Baums, a womens clothing store. Its time to take life a little
easier, to allow more time for traveling, but retirement is not being planned anytime
soon>"
Dick Spencer reports he ran into Bob Daley on the way back from the Frost
statue. "Bob is still working for Hewlett Packard and would like to retire, but HP
wont let him."
