Class of 1962 Writing and Rhetoric Program

Following the success of our Faculty Fellowship Program, the Class of 1962 decided at our 45th Reunion to endow a new project: The Class of 1962 Writing and Rhetoric Program. Our new Program will support courses in the College's Writing and Rhetoric Program, designed to strengthen students' skills in these disciplines. The Class of 1962 Writing and Rhetoric Program will "support discipline-specific writing courses in a 'Writing and Rhetoric Across the Curriculum' approach. Such an approach will teach students to communicate more effectively in their chosen fields of study." (Click here to view the Class' initial Program proposal, click here to view the "Statement of Understanding" between the Class of 1962 and the College and click here to view the list of class donors to the program as of February 2008 (is your name on it?).)

The Class of 1962 Writing and Rhetoric Program Fund was established with initial contributions from two anonymous classmates of $25,000 apiece. To this initial $50,000 funding, additional contributions totaling $1,464 have been received from numerous class donors. We are counting on additional and recurring contributions to the Fund over the coming years with an initial goal in mind of $250,000 and hopes of eventually reaching $1,000,000. (Click here for further information on how to contribute),

Statement by Gordon McKean, President, Class of 1962:
Gordie McKeonOnce again the Class of '62 is a position to make a dynamic and everlasting contribution to Dartmouth. Our long-established '62 Faculty Fellowship has no rivals in its academic impact by recognizing and providing the means to assist outstanding young faculty members. The Class of '62 Writing and Rhetoric Program will have an even greater educational impact by enabling many, if not all, Dartmouth students to develop, improve and hone their writing and speaking skills as they pursue their careers and become the leaders of tomorrow in their chosen fields of study.

I thank each of our classmates who worked tirelessly to establish this magnificent program. I encourage my classmates and extended '62 families to support by words and your dollars our class gift as we move forward to our 50th reunion.

Charlie Balch has been the driving force in the establishment of the Fund. He has provided an incisive outline of the various methods to make contributions (click here for more information). All we need now is your continuous and generous support. I for one, would have greatly benefited from an expanded Dartmouth writing and rhetoric program.

Come on '62s; lets use our heads and give from our hearts!

Gordie

Statement by Carol L. Folt, Dean of the Faculty:

Dean Carol Folt

I am very grateful to the Class of 1962 for their generosity in supporting the Writing and Rhetoric Program at Dartmouth.

Teaching individuals to express ideas clearly and convincingly has long been recognized as as a core goal of a Liberal Arts education. Dartmouth's Writing and Rhetoric Program was established in 2004 to strengthen the quality of students' writing, speaking and analytical skills.

Your thoughtful philanthropy will help ensure that the College continues to provide an education that second to none.  The endowment is particularly significant in that it is geared towards writing beyond the students' first-year and supports classes across the curriculum.

Carol L. Folt, Dean of the Faculty

Statement by Tom Cormen, Chair, Writing and Rhetoric Program; Professor of Computer Sciences

On behalf of the Writing and Rhetoric Program, I express our deepest
appreciation to the Class of 1962 for supporting Writing Across the

With this important addition to our program's slate of course offerings and student support services, the Dartmouth Writing and Rhetoric Program will become the most comprehensive program among our peer institutions.

Many thanks to the Class of 1962 for making it happen!
