At or near the end of a hard winter (from the perspective of January single-digit weather), I report news from several classmates experiencing transitions. Looking over the past year, Newell Grant writes that the Columbine high school tragedy touched literally close to home since the school is on land where he grew up, the family having sold the property to the school district in the 1970s. He describes his current schedule as, "hurtling through space at 38 miles per second, just clinging to debris." The family ranch near Steamboat Springs has been sold to a conservation land group, whose tough (bordering on unethical) negotiation strategies came as a surprise. He is president-elect of the Dartmouth Club of the Rocky Mountains, and co-chaired a dinner for 10 President Wright last spring.

Class president Steve Blecher asks classmates to read and give feedback on the report of the Committee on the Student Life Initiative that was released in January. The text and summary are available on the web at www.dartmouth.edu/-sandrl. Steve appreciated the mixture of classes in the dorms, which meant that freshmen could draw on the experiences of upper-classmen, and would like to hear what we think about the idea of dorms entirely populated by freshmen. Also, what do you think of limiting living in fraternities to seniors? Send comments directly to Steve (sblecher@ifsam.com) or post them on our comments page.

B.J. Batchelder has written to say that he and Dawne were married one year ago (April 1999), which brought him new son Grady (11) and daughter Lori (30). As a bonus, he became an instant grandpa with a granddaughter Cassie. His son Josh (27) married Marcia in September and 21 is at GE Capital in Chicago. His daughter Abby (25) is in New York with the high-fashion 22 designer Michael Kors. Since selling his last business in January 1999, he has been involved in 23 placing $3M to BB per project with companies that are in need of capital for growth or acquisitions.

Two mini-reunions in 2000 are detailed on our class web page: l) class of '64 mini-reunion October 27-29, 2000, in Hanover and 2) multi-class mini-reunion May 20, 2000, in Shenandoah National Park, Va., sponsored by the Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C., and the class of'63. All 1960s classes are invited. Speaking of reunions, we re trying to retrieve the disposable cameras that were distributed at the 35th Reunion. We'd like to post the pictures on our website but the cameras never showed up.

When I got Bob Paterson's e-mail address (BobPaterson64@aol.com), I wrote him via the comments section of our web page (http://happy.dartmouth.org/classes/64/news.html) and got a receipt message with the date January 4 19100, my first Y2K experience, courtesy of the College.
