Class of '64 (January-February 2003 issue)

I'm again sad to have to announce the unexpected passing of one of our classmates in August. Fred Spitz passed away Thursday, August 28th, 2002 at his home in Miami, Florida. Fred was President of Somerset Properties, after earning a law degree at St. John's University. Fred's brother, Stuart ('67) has written that Fred practiced law for only one year before moving into real estate. He adds, " The only thing else to say is that Fred loved to travel. It was not just the trips, but the planning that went into the trips was just as important. He was a wealth of knowledge about travel: where, how, when, sights, food, drink, local hangouts, intimate knowledge of so many places. He made at least one or two MAJOR trips a year. No one took trips like my brother (i.e., You just don't go to Africa-- you hang out with Dr. Leakey for a week and deliver dead camels for Leakey's lions to eat)." Please contact me with reminiscences of Fred for an In Memoriam tribute on our class Web page.

Ed Williams, class VP and former member of the US Olympic Biathlon Team, continues his active involvement with the US Olympic Committee as well as his practice of law specializing in assisting athletes. Ed and Steve Blecher have been working with Bob Bartles and Sabin Danziger to develop a master plan for our 40th Reunion to be held over Memorial Day weekend (May 21-24, 2004). Mark your calendars! More information will be forthcoming as the plans develop. Contact Ed or Steve if you have ideas of things we should do over this weekend.

While you have your calendar out, the Class will have another Homecoming mini-reunion in Hanover on October 24-26 2003 for the football game against Columbia. Dick Couch and Barbara have invited classmates to a dinner at their Hanover home on Saturday evening the 25th.

The Class is sponsoring its first Public Policy Student Interns in Washington, DC this winter term. Success of this program depends upon classmates paying their class dues and earmarking support for the students. John Topping, David Plavin, Dale Eickelman, and Dave Shipler are all involved with providing an enrichment experience to enhance this program.

Back in the January-February I quoted Harvey Tettlebaum as asking if it was newsworthy that he wasn't ready to retire. Now I can see why. Harvey's continuing good work has been recognized most recently by his inclusion in the 10th Edition of The Best Lawyers in America. Harvey serves as head of the Jefferson City MO office of Husch & Eppenberger and is a recognized authority in the areas of Health Care Law and Regulatory and Administrative Law. Harvey got his law degree and a Master's Degree in History from Washington University in 1968. After this he was Assistant Dean in the law school, then served as Assistant Attorney General under John Danforth. In 2000 he received the Missouri Bar's President's Award. Congratulations, Harvey!
