Class of '64 (January-February 2004 issue)

We note with sadness the passing of two classmates: James Allan Dull, who left after his Freshman year and completed his undergraduate degree at Stanford, died on September 5, 2003 in Cleveland OH. He was an attorney who shared pleasant memories of his year in a comment for our 25th Reunion Book. Gerald (Jerry) Palm, who ran in the 3K race at our 35th Reunion, and who was fit as the proverbial fiddle, was diagnosed with cancer in November 2001 and died in June 2003. I have some pictures from the Reunion that I'll place on the In Memoriam Web page for Jerry.

Here's a synopsis of Homecoming highpoints from class president Steve Blecher. "Forming up on Lebanon Street for the Dartmouth Night parade on October 24th, a baker's dozen classmates rallied round Al and Patti Gruber holding the 1964 banner for the evening march to the Green and the Dartmouth Night ceremonies which preceded the igniting of the bonfire built by the class of 2007. Stepping off to the music were Sandy McGinnes, Bob Bartles and Loren McGean, Tom Parkinson, Fran Hanlon, Ed Williams and Gail Hollister, Steve and Amy Blecher, Roy Lewicki, Hunt and Lynn Whitacre, Bill and Mary Ann Lewis, Chris and Suzanne Palmer, Marc and Nancy Kirschner, and Harvey Rohde and his grandchildren. The parade terminated at the Class Bench on the northeast corner of the Green to watch the festivities." At the class meeting on Saturday, Dale Eickelman described the success of our sponsored student internship program in Washington DC. Roy Lewicki and Sandy McGinnes reported on the generous gift giving by our class. The homecoming game outcome was favorable and various post-game celebrations culminated in a meal at Dick and Barbara Couch's home, where Jim and Beth Hughes and Ric DuPuy were able to join the group.

I've received a nice message from Carlos Ballantyne, who is no longer in Tibet (May 2000) but who continues his travels and photography. He has gone digital and attached a beautiful picture of sand dunes with finger-print-like ripples. Assuming Carlos approves, I'll make the photo available with a link after his name on the pw-protected e-mail page on our Web site.

The plans for our 40th Anniversary Reunion are ramping up under the capable stewardship of Class VP Ed Williams ( egwilliams@somlaw.com). In addition of Ed, the leadership team includes James A. Wright, A'64, Honorary Chair, Marc Kirschner, Co-Chair, and Hunt Whitacre, Treasurer and Co-Chair. If you haven't already done so, mark your calendars for Memorial Day Weekend in 2004 (May 28, 29, 30 & 31). Our Web site has the names of those who are already planning to come; add your name by contacting me as soon as you start making your plans, even if tentative. Ed and his team are finding accommodations in the area of every kind, and they are looking into the possibility that some of our teachers are still around and may be able to attend one or more of our gatherings.
