Class of '64 (January-February 2008 Issue)

Ron Schram's book, "Sports: A Generation's Common Bond" now in print made the front page of the Valley News sports section. It was a highly laudatory article, one of many no doubt on this 353 page collection of 70 essays written by grads, mostly '64's. As Ron says, it indicates "how essential sport was to the lives of our classmates." The book was the talk of the Class meeting on October 20 particularly the essay by Fred Rothenberg and his remembrance of the day he scored 26 points in basketball. Read the book to find the details, available through the Dartmouth Book Store! Again, congrats, Ron, on a fine contribution to Dartmouth and the Class. Homecoming has come and gone, and as always, is one of the best weekends to visit Dartmouth and see classmates. The weather was rainy for the parade although some 10 members of the class did march. The rains cleared out for the bonfire and the ceremony at the Green was "go Green" and watch the '11's whoop it up around the fire. Ed Williams ( with Gail) held forth at the class meeting on Saturday morning with Bob Bartles, Dale Eickelman, Bill Lewis, Bob MacArthur, Sandy McGinnes, Tom Parkinson ( and Donna), Ray Peters, Phil Schaefer, and myself present. There were many highlights to the meeting (please see the Minutes posted on our Class website). Among those to mention were a) the discussion led by Professor Arthur Samwick of Rockefeller Center concerning the Class Intern project, b) the discussion of continuing efforts by Pete Luitwieler to encourage classmates to become members of the Bartlett Tower Society by naming Dartmouth a beneficiary in your estate. Tim Caldwell '76 discussed the options; c) Tom Good, our class treasurer, issued a strong financial report on the Class, and d) the terrific job Sabin Danziger, Steve Stein, Roy Lewicki, and Alan Woodberry have done in College fund raising for the Class. Ed, great meeting. At the Homecoming halftime at the football game, the 1962 football team was honored and on that Ivy championship team were the following '64's present: Peter Benzian, Scott Creelman, Jan Dephouse, Charlie Greer, Tom Parkinson, Ray Peters, Tom Spangenberg, Dave Stenger, Joe Triolo, and Chris Vancura. Nice to see you all back. In connection with the recognition given the '64 players, the class sponsored the Friends of Football Tent - part of our continuing tradition of support for Dartmouth athletics. After the game, the Class hosted a well attended cocktail party at the Hayward Lounge of the Hanover Inn with '65's, '66's, and '67's invited. It was great to see Jim Wright there and to hear/see the Dartmouth Band trooping through the lobby in celebration of the football win. In the evening, Bill and Mary Ann Lewis hosted some 30 classmates/spouses for a sumptuous dinner at their beautiful home on the Connecticut river in Lyme, NH. In attendance in addition to some mentioned above were Bob Burton, Rick DuPuy, Fran Hanlon (Josie), Dave Hewitt (Kate), Keith Hartley ( Bev), Chris Palmer (Suzanne) Ed Rubel (Earline), and Peter Wright (Penny). Great food and great friends. Thanks Bill and Mary Ann. See you next October 17-18, 2008 for Homecoming. PLEASE share some news with me? Thanks. Hunt Whitacre hrwhit@aol.com
