Class of '64 (January-February 2009 Issue)

Homecoming weekend was again terrific - unless you were a rabid football fan. It was a beautiful three days to view the colors and feel the vitality of the crowd. Friday night was the parade and Lynne and Hunt Whitacre held the Class of 1964 banner along with Al Gruber and his wife, Pat and Mike Parker and Carolyn. We have marched in the parade for 10 years, and I now notice that classes slightly older than ours are using fancy cars or hay wagons to cart alums along the route. Sign of the future? The bonfire on the Green was huge, the glee club sang out the school songs, and the "shmen" ran continuous circles around the blaze. On Saturday morning, Ed Williams hosted the class meeting and a large group showed up. I guess our class would rather "argue" than march. I don't have room to share what was said by each attendee, but here are some snippets: Professor Roy Lewicki enjoyed teaching part of the Fall term at Tuck School this year; Mike Parker climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Rainer; Ron Schram is working on his third book this one about comparing a year in the life of his granddaughter and a year in Ron's life - guess who made mistakes? Richard Behrens expressed his passion for early Dartmouth history; Phil Schaefer asked us to think positively about Bill Martin who is in the hospital; Dale Eickelman, Bob Bartles, furniture builder and KUA trustee; Bob MacArthur, in charge of the nominating committee for new class officers. Fritz Corrigan, Al Woodbury, Peter Benzian, and Karl Winkler are also on the committee. Rick DuPuy teaches at University. of Maryland; Fred Rothenberg says "go Tampa Bay." Tom Spangenberg teaches at Castleton State College and is our 45th Reunion Chair; Ed Williams keeps the class moving forward as president. One of the key topics was the class project with the Rockefeller Institute and the Washington, DC intern program. After the football game, the class along with the '65's and '66's had a well attended cocktail party at the Hayward lounge in the Hanover Inn. The Saturday night dinner was a lot of fun and in addition to those mentioned above, Steve Ward and Victoria, and Dave Hewitt and Kate were present. The dinner was graciously hosted by Barbara and Dick Couch. Thanks Couchs for once again being our dinner hosts. On Sunday morning, Mike Parker led an "assault" of Gile mountain to cap off the weekend. Dr. Peter Wright, a recent resident of Norwich, Vermont., joined in with about 7 others. Fun weekend. A special word about Dale Eickelman, professor at Dartmouth, who was recently presented with a silver plaque commemorating Dale's "instrumentality" in building collaboration between the American University of Kuwait and Dartmouth College. Dale is "Relationship Coordinator" with this new institution that now numbers 2000 students and in five years is likely to double. Nice work, Dale. Put June 15-18, 2009 on your calendar for our 45th gala Reunion. Hunt Whitacre.
