Class of '64 (July-August Issue)

A fantastic congratulations to Lauren McGean and her partner, Bob Bartles who led the Dartmouth Figure Skating Team in early April to a fifth national title in as many years. As Ed Gingras'said in his congratulatory note, "can you give the football team some tips?" Way to go. A great congratulations also to Scott Creelman who was selected by the Western Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame as the recipient of the Henry Bulova Award. The Bulova Award honors a former football player from the region who is devoted to the game and has distinguished himself after the playing days. Scott has been the head of Spalding Sports Worldwide. Great recognition. Quiz time: which classmate has the youngest child? Well, the answer is probably George Estabrook whose wife, Virginia, just had their first child together on February 10 of this year (his wife is a year 2000 grad of Bryn Mawr). Let's see - when this daughter, Elizabeth, is entering Dartmouth in the class of 2029, the annual cost of tuition will be what? And when she marches at graduation as a 50th year alumna it will be 2079. George has three children by his former marriage. George is in his 38th year as Professor of Botany at the U. of Michigan and wants to retire to New Hampshire and Portugal in a few years. He was given the "outstanding teacher" award several years ago, and among a wide range of subjects, studies the use of solar power for farming in Portugal. I have a feeling the word "gramps" is heard when George wheels baby Elizabeth around. Congratulations to the oldest new father in the class. It was great to hear from Dave Stenger who had not been back to the campus until Homecoming Weekend last October. The visit " was a special experience for sure. All of my impressions of the College were very favorable. Visually, Dartmouth is still terrific. So many new buildings but still the same old place. . . However, fraternity/sorority row appeared somewhat quiet Saturday night at least compared to how I remember it at Homecoming - and what great memories they are." Dave was one of the members of the championship 1963 football team that was honored at Homecoming, and Dave is grateful for the arrangements they made. After getting out of Tuck he earned his CPA and was a financial executive for Eli Lilly for 30 plus years. His real interest has been in farming, however, and he and his wife bought a farm outside of Indianapolis in 1972. Dave would love to hear from fellow classmates Frank Loveland, Randy Stayin, Tom Maddux, Larry Laster, and Barry Ramsdell, to name a few. Dave, thanks for the update. Two dates to put on the calendar: Homecoming Weekend is October 17 - 19, 2008, and our 45th Reunion is planned for June 15 - 18, 2009. Please drop me a note. Thanks. Hunt Whitacre, secretary.
