CLASS OF 1964

TO APPEAR IN THE JANUARY 1998 ISSUE
MIDDLE MASS. Part 4

More on the current lives of the Middle Mass 64's...

We begin the new year with the final column about the men who spent their freshman year living in Middle Mass. Leading off with Paul O'Connell (Bolton, Mass.), who is practicing law and lists among his accomplishments reducing his number of partners from forty to one and more significantly, running in and completing, the Boston Marathon. He reports frequent contact with Martin "Hop" Potter (McLean, Virginia) who is working at the Federal Aviation Agency in the Air Carrier Training Branch. Also living in McLean is Randy Stayin who is practicing law in D.C. Tom Phillips (Potomac, Maryland), last reported here as heading to Disney World with his employees, is president and CEO of Phillips Publishing International, one of the largest periodical publishers in the United States and the largest newsletter publisher in the country. Class newsletter editor, Bob Paterson sold his Rochester based company and moved to Florida (Bonita Springs) where in addition to playing golf, he is the owner of a BP gas station and convenience store. A little further up the sun coast of Florida is ex-Middle Mass resident Don Schwartz (Holiday, FL). I have received several emails from Don who was forced to retire from the practice of pediatric hematology and oncology in 1984 due to failing vision due to Retinitis Pigmentosa. However, he has remained active, swimming and working out every day; practicing on the piano and reading the small print in the newspaper! He has also taken over as the local District Enrollment Director from classmate Fred Rothenberg (Tampa,. FL). Don' s home is located just north of Tarpon Springs and he and his three Swiss Mountain dogs would welcome visits from classmates who are in the area. He also asked me to mention (as did many others) Nick Listorti, who died of cancer in 1976. (Editors note: Don expressed an interest in reviving the Nick Listorti fund and would be interested in hearing from other interested classmates by email (donschwartz@MEM.po.com)

Four other '64 physicians checked in in response to my request for information. Ken Sack (Tiburon, California) is a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco where he also holds the title of Director of the clinical program in Rheumatology. His roommate, Don Schwartz, reports that Ken will spend the next decade doing the "kids in college" thing with three daughters climbing up the educational ladder. Also on the west coast, Michael Wilkin (Bend, Oregon) is an anesthesiologist at the St. Charles Medical Center and Randy Weingarten (Palo Alto, California) is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the Stanford Medical Center. I received a delightful letter from Randy about an encounter with an pre-med senior in the class of 1997 who called him out of the blue and asked if he would show her around. The visit resulted in the young women actually being present at the birth of a healthy set of twins by Cesarean section, and equally importantly, helped Randy to become re-connected to the College after many years as a "fallen-away alumnus." Closer to the center of the universe (contrary to what they think in Palo Alto), John Sanders (Lyme, NH) is back in the Upper Valley after many years in Chicago. John is a cardiac surgeon at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Still in Chicago, however, is Gene Veto who is president of Argus Capital corporation.

That does it for the men of Middle Mass except for the following classmates who I was unable to locate or contact: Ed Brazil, Charles Coffin, C. Thomas Gibson, David Goldstein, Dennis Kundsin, Thomas Mortell, Terry Terhune and John VeLonis. If you are on this list, please get in touch with me with an update.
