March-April 2007

The holidays are upon us in Hanover, although when you read this it will be February. As of this writing, there is no snow in Hanover, and none in prospect - despite the Farmer's Almanac forecasts. So much for prognosticators. In the spirit of fun times, a few of our classmates have been busy (probably more of you have been having fun, but you need to write me for me to know.) For one, Pete Luitwieler and his wife, Jane (this sounds like a Tarzan story coming) went to Africa and Kenya for two weeks and had a great time. Pete sent along some great pictures showing incredible close ups of the elephants and lions (were they guests on tour or part of the scenery?). He writes, "we still cannot believe what an incredible trip it was. The scenery was great, food was excellent, other travelers in our group were fun, the living arrangements were awesome (upscale tent the final 5 days), the weather was perfect, and the access and proximity to animals far exceeded our expectations. Much of this was the result of our incredible driver/guides. Both native Kenyans." In the spirit of fun, Tom Harlow writes about a self-guided mini reunion he had in Kiawah Island, SC with 14 members of the class. He writes, "I don't know if the golf or the dinners were more fun, but I can't tell you how many laughs we had. In attendance were, in order of importance, Tom Harlow, Jay Regan, Don Waite, Lew Eisenberg, Penn Siegel, Sven Karlen '65,Bob Freeman, Herb McCord, Mike Kolman, Ehney Camp, Bill Madden, John Lincoln, Scott Creelman, and Craven Morehead." I do see Sven in Hanover periodically, asked him about the outing, and he said "it is amazing how quickly one reverts to college antics when you get together with good friends." Also having fun, but of a different sort is our man in the midst of big changes, John Topping. Jr. who is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his founding of the Climate Institute in DC. John has updated his activities in a lengthy email to Ron Schram so please read Ron's newsletter for more of John's comments. But John is clearly energized by the support and credibility global warming is getting. John compliments Susie Chung '07 for her work as a Class of 1964 intern during the summer for the Climate Institute. "She did a remarkable job helping support the Washington Summit on Climate Stabilization, September 18 - 21." John mentions that three classs members were recognized at the Summit: Dave Shipler and Lou Goodman as speakers and Hal Rabner as a funder. Of significance, the Climate Institute is creating atop Sierra Negra in Mexico, a climate observatory to measure greenhouse gases, ultraviolet radiation, and aerosol emissions. John is seeking some $250,000 to build the platform for these instruments so please contact John at jtoppingjr@yahoo.com for more information. John, for the class, many thanks for your great work with the Intern Program. Have a wonderful Winter and email me at hrwhit@aol.com.
