Class of '64 (March-April 2009 issue)

Greetings from wintry Hanover. Dr. Steve Sherman wrote that he retired from his diagnostic radiology practice in Pocatello, Idaho in August just in front of the collapse of the stock market, making retirement just a little more risky. As an outdoorsman, Steve enjoys hunting and bagged in November a nice elk. "The hunting was on foot from 5500 to 7500 feet. I'm grateful to still be able to climb that far in the mountain though packing 300 lbs. of elk a mile back out convinced me I really was 66." Clearly Steve is not an "old" 66. Steve sees Park and Sharon Price regularly, and mentioned being visited by Garth Gregory (also a radiologist) and wife Valerie from California. Enjoy retirement, Steve. Mayor Bill Barnet of Spartanburg, SC told me he was a successful write in candidate for the position in 2002. "Some folks wanted me to run and I had no interest. A write in campaign was created and they asked me again. I declined and they wrote me in." Bill indicates his term is ending in November, 2009 and "doesn't want to run" - have we heard this before? I asked Max Blumberg for an update. First, Max's company, Blumberg Industries, as Chairman and CEO, is a very successful designer and manufacturer of lighting fixtures under the Fine Art Lamps name. In addition to work, Max has a passion for remodeling houses, with two homes in Cornish, NH that he merged that had been part of the Cornish Art Colony, and a house in Paris that was designed by the architects of Napoleon. His permanent residence is Fisher Island, Florida. He has been in touch with classmate, Jan Hoving who lives near Amsterdam. Max, hope you can make it to the reunion. Steve Blecher has been having "fun" as Vice Chairman and COO for Morgan Joseph bankers in NYC . His most fun is watching his two infant grandchildren grow up, one a daughter by his son Jeff'98, and one a grandson by his other son Andrew, Williams '95. He traveled last spring to China just escaping from the earthquake area by about a week. China was "very vibrant, fascinating." He and Amy are avid sailors and do the Maine coast in August, and plan on a sailing trip to the Windward Islands soon. He visited with Jay and Hasty Evans and said that Jay "is becoming quite an artist." Dave Plavin and Steve lunched together not too long ago and Dave is now in New York running his own aviation consulting practice. Steve, let's get this market turned around. Be sure you have our 45th Reunion June 15 - 18, 2009, on your calendar. This reunion is in conjunction with other classes so there will be a lot of opportunities to enjoy college sponsored activities (glee club, lectures, e.g.),to play golf or tennis, as well as to mingle with your friends. It will be a lot of fun. See our class website for details. Hunt Whitacre, hrwhit@aol.com.
