Column for Class of '64 (March/April issue)

With sadness we document the passing of Fred Wangaard (August) and Blair Clark (October). See the Class of '64 Web page for memorial tributes.

Steve Roberts sent me more than one e-mail address, which is consistent with his work in the website strategy and design business after a long career making investments for large financial institutions. He has his own website: CTcyber.com. He and wife spent several weeks hiking in his native Colorado last summer. Rick Carey sent me his updated e-mail address from AxioMedia --- Automotive History, Personalities & Passion in one of my favorite towns, Mystic CT. I'll get Rick to tell us more about his company.

Jerry Kolski, who is currently chair of Pediatrics at Crozer Chester Medical Center in Pennsylvania, saw many transitions last year; daughters Melissa and Andrea finished physical therapy and law schools, respectively. Graduations were on the same weekend so the indefatigable parents hopped on planes and made both ceremonies. Son Brian is starting at Loyola University Medical School in Chicago. Another physician, Wendell Smith, (TrumpetSwan@aol.com) wrote a fascinating message that's too long for this venue (see upcoming Newsletter for full text); he's living in Greenfield, NH, practicing Emergency Medicine in Lowell, MA. In 1973 he was a reporter for The Real Paper in Boston and was in Wounded Knee during the occupation; he left to write about his experience and was arrested when he tried to return. His e-mail handle, TrumpSwan, comes from a poem he wrote back in the 70's, "when I spent about 10 years as part of the Cambridge dandruff in the Long Hair of Harvard". While on the subject of poetry, I'm reminded of Fred Kolo (Kolouch), who may lead the class in creative breadth. In addition to being in charge of set design for a very popular TV detective series, he recently completed a book of poetry ("Heart Beats" published by Columbine Press), and last year I received a notice that he was playing acoustic guitar at The Hampton Coffee Company (Breakfast Music, four weekends in a row). The exclamation "Wow" comes to mind.

Two classmates have first year students at the College: Mark Goodman's son Adam and John Topping's daughter Alexandra have joined the Class of '04. Mark is reducing his law practice and concentrating on commercial arbitration and other forms of dispute resolution. His wife, Kathie (Mt. Holyoke '66), teaches at the local middle school. John's other daughter, Elizabeth is in the class of '02, majoring in geography. Don Mutterperl ended a 22 year career at PaineWebber last November. Feeling too young and energetic to retire to the beach, he joined Blaylock & Partners, a small minority and women's owned investment banking and trading firm and is enjoying life. He and his wife Nancy ran into Sally and Bill Neukom in Sun Valley last December. It was easy to spot Bill since he was proudly wearing a Big Green baseball cap.
