Class of '64 (May-June issue)

The Jan/Feb issue of DAM featured three classmates: Dale Eickelman discussing the impact of 9/11 on society, Doug Raybeck about Innocence Lost post 9/11, and the endpaper interview with Trustee Bill Neukom, who has announced his plan to retire from Microsoft at the end of June, musing about what he has learned since graduation.

In the "it's never too early to plan ahead" department, Dick Couch and Barbara are inviting classmates to their home for dinner on the Saturday evening (November 2) of the Homecoming Weekend. See the class Web page for details.

The College has honored John Topping for his leadership in environmental initiatives, such as removing lead from gasoline, banning smoking on U.S. airplanes, and assessing the threat of CFCs to the ozone layer. John has always been active in social justice movements including civil rights and public health. As a student at Yale Law School, he was an activist for passage of the Voting Rights Act and prepared a proposal for negative income tax. John is currently president of the Climate Institute and consults with foreign governments on improving their environmental policies.

Business Wire reports that Garrett (Garry) Dreier was recently appointed chief executive officer of StarBak Communications in Columbus OH. Garry got his MBA from Columbia Business School and worked at News Corp. and Lucent Technologies before assuming his current duties. He is quoted as having a "commitment to streaming rich media in compelling new ways." Maybe it's just me, but I can't help thinking of Thayer Dining Hall when I hear about some of these technological innovations. Garry wants to make his company a leader in the transfer of videoconferences-to-Web streaming. Sabin Danziger started the new year at a new firm. He is now associated with Fahnestock & Co. in NYC, selling stocks to institutions in Baltimore, NYC and Boston. Willard Cook and Sally have taken another step in moving from Wyoming to the Marblehead MA area. For the second consecutive winter, they are renting a home in Marblehead and sampling various east coast cultural activities. They are selling their Wyoming home and looking for one in the greater Boston area. Now we should see more of the Cooks at mini-reunions.

The announcement of an issue about special places on campus stimulated the following from Carlos Ballantyne: "I was always partial to the basement bar of Alpha Delta Phi which was wisely constructed with a gutter around its periphery. Whiling away days at a time in this dank haven drinking chip kegs and listening to Mary Wells, Dr Horse, The Flamingos, Joey Dee, et al. greatly speeded my most important educational lesson from Dartmouth College, that I am unable to drink alcohol successfully. Happily, I've found I can even more fully satisfy my penchant for drama and excitement sober than I could while drinking and have been doing so full out for 27 years now. [...] To my knowledge the AD bar has not yet been converted to a press briefing room."
