Class of '64 (May-June 2005 issue)

Did you know that Dartmouth was named by Booz Allen Hamilton as one of the world's ten most enduring institutions of the 20th and 21st centuries? The only other academic institution mentioned in the top 10 was Oxford. Other institutions mentioned were the "Olympic Games," the Rolling Stones, General Electric, Sony, the American Constitution, etc. Check out the Booz website for further details, but we are in some good company....Speaking of good company, we have been notified that Roger Hull, current President of Union College and Chancellor of Union University, is being considered among four others for the presidency of William and Mary College. Roger earned his LL.B. from Yale and an LL.M and S.J.D. from the University of Virginia (how many years did it take?) He was President of Beloit College from 1981 to 1990. We wish Roger well in this search. Tim Brooks writes that he has recently published a book named "Lost Sounds: Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry, 1890-1919." This book is one of several books written by Tim dealing with TV and music. He is a past President of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections from which he received a Lifetime Achievement Award. You can hear an interview with Tim and listen to some of the music he has uncovered by tapping into www.wfmu.org/playlists/te. Bruce Cross attended the 40th reunion and (let me quote) "had a very enjoyable time - more fun and memories than I imagined." Bruce's daughter in-law is an '02 and he mentions that she is talking about "how the college has changed 'since she was there,' humph." Bruce is a labor/employment lawyer in Seattle. He sees Reed Langenbach, a fellow Seattle attorney, on occasion, and sends his regards to all. Bob Cahners continues to be the heavy lifter in the Class. He has recently won the National Masters Ultra Weight Throw in Seattle - the Ultra weights are 100 lbs, 200lbs, and 300 lbs. and he admits that those who throw these weights are viewed as part of the "lunatic fringe" of the Masters program. In the past few years he has won 6 World and National Masters throwing championships and on this basis was inducted into Dartmouth's "Wearers of the Green" this past May. He has retired to Naples, Florida and is building a new house. He and his wife, Pam, have a son going for his PhD in Anthropology and a daughter going for a Masters in Clinical Psychology! Bob reports he sees "classmate Herb McCord quite often. Herb and Judi also have a house here in Naples. I also see a lot of Mike Kolman who also owns property here in Southwest Florida. Fran Hanlon, Bob Freeman, and Brad Evans showed up at the "Wearers of the Green" ceremony which made the night that much more special for me." Many thanks for these inputs and please send your personal reflections to me at hrwhit@aol.com.
