News right and left. First, William Neukom has been nominated to be President-Elect of the American Bar Association. His term, if elected(?) would be 2008. As classmates, we extend to Bill our best congratulations for being named to this most prestigious position. David Shipler, his family Fund, has donated royalties from his book, The Working Poor: Invisible in America to Good Beginnings, a local New Hampshire non-profit to further their efforts to give practical support and information to families with young children.

Which brings me to Phil Schaefer of Grantham, New Hampshire, who has spent considerable time and effort on a great project that other '64's who have the inclination/time could replicate in their own towns. Phil organized a World War II oral history and writing project in the Grantham elementary school with the help of the 5th grade teacher and the school principal. Phil identified a dozen vets, invited them to school for student interviews, and helped organize the questions. The students transcribed the interviews, typed their chapters into computer files, inserted pictures, and assembled a draft that Phil and others helped edit. 300 books were printed up, a Veteran's Day celebration with the vets was organized, patriotic songs were sung by the kids, speeches were given, the press came, and all the books were sold. A copy was sent to the WWII museum in New Orleans and the Library of Congress. "It was then a life experience - write the book, sell the book and with the profits...well, those went to pay for the transportation to environmental camp for these same kids." The teacher involved said, "the stories were of bravery and survival, yes, but they were also the stories of a time when movies cost a nickel, when the students brought in firewood to heat the school and quenched their thirst with water they hauled up from the springs and wells...This was the real stuff." Phil would be most happy to send CDs with everything about the project to any Dartmouth grad of any class who would like to replicate this project in their town. Phil's email address is philschaefer@iname.com. Phil has a Ph.D from Caltech, taught in academe, worked for big drug companies and is now "retired" in Grantham with his wife, Mary Lou. Great work, Phil.

Finally, please mark your calendar for a Mini Class Reunion being planned by Ed Williams and John Topping in Washington, DC for June 16 through June 18. The program will provide attendees a first hand look at the Civics Training Session given by Dartmouth's Rockefeller Institute to Washington interns. As you know, our class sponsors 2 interns a year in DC. The training/panel sessions on "Capitol Hill" and "Media" will be part of the reunion, with a reception and dinner on Saturday, June 17 for the interns and our class. We will have a special mailing with the details soon. Hunt Whitacre
