1964 NOVEMBER

As the countdown to the last great reunion in the 20th century continues (October 8-10, 1999 in case you missed it); I turn my attention to the members of our class who began their Dartmouth careers as residents of Russell Sage Hall. But first a bit of history regarding Russell Sage. According to former resident, Tim Brooks (Greenwich, CT), Russell Sage was an industrial robber baron in the nineteenth century that refused to share his wealth with anyone. When he died, his wife, who had suffered his selfishness for years, began to distribute his fortunes to colleges across America resulting in numerous buildings being named after him...just to spite him. Tim is currently a senior vice-president for research at USA Networks in New York. He is very active in industry affairs serving as chairman of the board of both the Advertising Research Foundation and the Media Ratings Council, and is the co-author of The Complete Directory of Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows, which is now in its 6th edition. Tim's roommates during that initial year were Jim Laughlin (Long Valley, New Jersey) and Don Bross (Boulder, CO). Jim is currently an attorney practicing civil law. Since returning from Viet Nam in 1968, he has been active in his community serving in a variety of positions from mayor to soccer coach. Don is a Professor of Pediatrics (Family Law) with the Kempe National Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect at the University of Colorado. He is the author of dozens of scholarly articles and books and is the co-founder of the National Association of Counsel for Children.

Also living on the fourth floor that year were Chris (Drive In) Gates, Roger (T-Bear) Nastou, Brian Hewins, Dave (Deke) DeCalesta and Nick Listorti. Chris (Pittsford, NY) is employed by Eastman Kodak in Rochester, while Roger (Hingham, Massachusetts) is a vice president in the fixed income division of John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston. Brian is a Radiologist and resides in San Marino, California and Dave is a Research Wildlife Biologist for the U.S. Forest Service in Warren, Pennsylvania. Nick as many of you know died of leukemia in 1976.

Other Russell Sage alums checking in were Joe Triolo (Mount Airy, Maryland), Tom Illick (Coopersburg, Pennsylvania) and Steven Feldman (Rehoboth, Massachusetts). Steve is the associate medical director for the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership and a Psychiatrist at the University of Rhode Island and Joe is a Mathematician at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory where he is working on analysis and software development for submarines, aircraft and spacecraft. Tom (who is practically my neighbor) writes that as a partner in Illick brothers-a domestic rental and building business, he has so far managed to avoid being driven by a computer. However, we may have to search our data banks to see if we can find a classmate who has worked longer for one employer-42 years! Since the 8th grade, Tom has had only two other employers-The Hanover Inn and the Pennsylvania National Guard who both paid him meals and tip money. That's all for now.

Wondering about roommates Bob LeResche and Lloyd Briggs? Be sure to read my next column.

Remember; mark October 8-10, 1999 on your calendar. It's the date of the last great reunion of the century.
