MOULTONBORO, N.H. - Gardner L. Brown Jr., 53 of Redding Lane, died Friday at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, after a long illness.

Born in Lewiston, Maine, a son of Gardner L. and A. Susan Webber Brown, he grew up there and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1959. He graduated from Hebron Academy, and went on to graduate from Dartmouth College in 1964 with a bachelor of arts degree. He was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity at Dartmouth.

In 1968, he started his executive banking career as a customer service representative for the First National Bank of Boston in Framingham, Mass., until his move to Vermont in 1979. He then worked for the Vermont National Bank in Wilmington, where he became assistant vice president and branch manager. In 1988, he moved to Moultonboro, and became a regional vice president of the First New Hampshire Bank in Meredith.

In 1964, he joined the Navy and served on board the USS Oriskany and saw active duty in five campaigns during the Vietnam War.

In September 1992, he received a Prestigious Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his key role and exceptional performance as an executive officer at the Defense Research Support Center of the Defense Logistics Agency. He retired from the Naval Reserve as a commander.

Mr. Brown was an active member and director of the Lakes Region United Way, a member of the Meredith Chamber of Commerce and was appointed to the Curriculum Committee of the Moultonboro School District. He was involved with the Moultonboro Recreation Department as a coach for soccer and baseball.

On Sept. 11, he and his wife celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary by renewing their marriage vows.

Survivors include his parents of Homosassa, Fla.; his wife, Suzanne M. (MacDonald) Brown, a son, Zachary L. and a daughter, Whitney EI. Brown, all of Moultonboro; and a brother, Steve of Wilmington, Vt.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Moultonboro United Methodist Church, Moultonboro. The Rev. Edward Charest will officiate. Burial will be held in Maine at a later date. Arrangements are by the Mayhew Funeral Home, Meredith, N.H.
