JUMBLATT, JAMES (JIM) EDWARD Ph.D. , died at Norton Hospital in Louisville,
KY on January 26, 2008 after a heroic struggle with chronic lymphocytic
leukemia. Jim was born on March 28, 1942 to Albert and Pearl Jumblatt in Everett,
Washington and was raised in La Jolla California. He joined the class of '64
but graduated from the University of California at Berkley in 1965. He served
in the Peace Corps for two years as a volunteer in Afghanistan. He received
his Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York City. He pursued postdoctoral
studies at the Biozentrum in Basel, Switzerland, Tufts University in Boston,
MA, and the Institute of Oceanography in Woods Hole, MA. Jim joined the
faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at the University of
Louisville in 1987 and retired in 2006. Jim is married to Marcia Meisner
Jumblatt and has a son, Nicholas (Nick) Jumblatt. He was a member and former
elder of Springdale Presbyterian Church. Jim had many interests including
fly-fishing, photography, cooking and music. Jim was a leading research scientist,
a mentor to junior investigators, an avid reader, a philosophical seeker and
a friend to many. He will be greatly missed. He also has a sister, Carol
MacNeill, of San Diego, CA.
