Greetings from Hanover. Summer is soon ending and it is time to make plans to return to Dartmouth for Homecoming, October 13 - 15, 2006. This is a great mini reunion due to the fall colors, the alumni parade, the pep rally, the bonfire, and the chance to see other friends over cocktails and dinner. Hope you will make it "home." Speaking of get-togethers, our class hosted a wonderful mini reunion in Washington, DC June 16 - 18, 2006. It was timed with the week-long Civic Skills Training Workshop conducted by the Rockefeller Center for student interns about to embark on their off-campus internships around the country and abroad. Sixteen interns were joined by thirteen classmates and their spouses and guests, together with a number of members of the Dartmouth Club of DC. In attendance were Bob Bartles and Loren McGean '92, Rick Behrens and his wife, Lee; Sabin Danziger and Ellen, Karl DuPuy, Pete Escherich and Susan, John Fishel, Lou Goodman (Dean of the School of International Service at American University, who spoke after the panel discussion and thanked John Topping on behalf of our class for his work with the intern program), Alan McKee, Andres ("Chico") Salazar, Randy Stayin, Jim Verdier, and Ed Williams and his wife Gail Hollister (next column, I will write about Ed , Gail, and their son's lunch with Sandra Day O'Conner at the Supreme Court.). Our thanks to John Topping for his efforts and Bill Fitzhugh who arranged for a private tour of his Artic Exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum.
Final numbers are not in yet as of this writing, but it appears the Class of 1964 will continue to set the standard for other classes with a record-breaking non-reunion contribution to the College of $550,000 and class participation possibly exceeding 60%. This is a tribute to the great support by many members of the class and to Sabin Danziger (Head Agent), Roy Lewicki (Participation Chair), and Steve Stein (Leadership Giving). Great job.
Several '64's attended the College's June commencement including Bill Neukom and Brad Evans as trustees, and Ron Schram. Marc Kirshner was there enjoying the graduation of his daughter Diana ( cum laude), Roger Nastou and his son, Dan ( summa cum laude), Steve Blecher with his son Jeff '98 and Chip Noecker with his daughter Lindsey '97 - both graduating from Tuck. Congratulations all.
Sadly I report the untimely death of Lee Slocum. Raymond Neff has written a very moving obituary of Lee published in this magazine. Ray is Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Grand Rapids Community College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and commutes to Santa Fe, New Mexico, his home. He sees periodically other class members including Duncan Hughes, Dick Leukart, and Ehney Camp. Ray roomed with Lee as freshmen, and as graduate students at Harvard.
