Class of '64 (September-October 2008 Issue)

Hello classmates. First off, some congratulations. To John Topping who writes that in May he received a certificate from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC) - the co-recipient with Al Gore of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. It read: "presented to John Topping for contributing to the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 to the IPCC." John, as our classmates may know, is President and founder of the Climate Institute in DC and in addition to his activities of assessing and helping improve the environment he is our key man organizing the Dartmouth Rockefeller Intern program, our Class project, in Washington. John, thanks for all you do and congratulations on the wonderful recognition you received. Congratulations also go to our Ron Schram who was recently elected to the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association on the "unity" slate. Ron is dedicated to resolving differences among the Alumni groups and helping Dartmouth continue to excel as a preeminent educational institution. Ron, we are with you. Time to think about coming to the XX?? ( 45th) Reunion of our Class scheduled for June 15 - 18, 2009, a date which will be shared with several other classes. Please send me, Ed Williams, or any class officer, your ideas about activities/dinners/gifts/costs/ willingness to be part of the committee for the reunion. It will be a lot of fun if we get your input. Neal Stanley wrote about his activities as well as his frustration with the recently completed Alumni Association election. Neal has a father, brother and daughter who all graduated from Dartmouth so he continues to have significant ties to the college. He says hello to Bill Lewis and Dave Hewitt who "provides him ample incentives to visit" the college. His career revolved around insurance, where from law school he joined Industrial Indemnity as a corporate counsel. He moved to the management side of the business and found he enjoyed that more. "After leaving Industrial, I was involved in running smaller insurance companies, helping position them for sale or managing a 'turn around.'" As Executive VP and COO of United Valley Insurance Services, Inc., Neal has been "blessed with a satisfying career and many friends." Hope to see you back for the 45th, Neal. By the way, he wasn't the only one who was frustrated with all the emails. Bob Field wrote a very thoughtful note on the subject of the Trustees and the alumni issues and I am sure is happy the election is over. We are saddened with the passing of two classmates. Lawrence "Luke"Carpenter died April 28 in Marysville, California. James Edward Jumblatt died January 26 from chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Our condolences go out to the wives and families of these Men of Dartmouth. Please mark your calendars for Dartmouth night Oct 17 and our class meeting on Saturday, Oct 18 over Homecoming weekend. Send me your thoughts that I can share with your friends. Thanks. Hunt Whitacre, 115 East Wheelock Street, Hanover, NH 03755, hrwhit@aol.com.
