CLASS NOTES April 1979
It was a difficult February for America ... and the College. Cold and inhospitable weather everywhere; a staunch and long-standing friend was rocked by still-evolving revolution; our newest ally launched a full-scale invasion of our most recent adversary; there's war in Africa; a U.S. ambassador was murdered; inflation persists. And Nelson Rockefeller, a loyal and luminous alumni, died.
Our personal growth as individuals continues, absorbing nearly all of our emotions and attention. That is as it should be. But every once in a while we've got to take a quick glance outside of our tight life circle and, at least, look at what's going on.
Who's carrying on at the Rick and Carol Godfrey household in Birmingham, Mich.? Two little daughters, Maggie, one, and Jennifer, five. Rick is an assistant vice president at the National Bank of Detroit specializing in the management of employee benefit funds.
And there's a new addition in Tom and Gretchen Clarke's Wilbraham, Mass., home. Justin, born December 4, 1978, weighing in, naturally, at a solid 9 Ibs 2 oz. Tom's an orthopedic surgeon in Springfield, Mass. And Gretchen hasn't changed a bit. She jogged 792 miles during her pregnancy and managed to keep track of Dirk, eight, and Kristina, five.
A quote from Walt Knoepfel - "Now that I've returned from my two years in Indonesia, I'd like you to know that I brought back with me the ultimate import - a delightful Indonesian lady named Murni, who is now my wife. Ah! The wondrous delights of the Orient!"
I'm just going to give you Bill Malcolm's address ... you can fill in the lifestyle yourself: Breeze Hill Farm, Isaac Perkins Road, Lyme Center, N.H. Sounds good. Bill can boast that address because he is general manager of Irad Gage Co., manufacturer of precision gages in Lebanon, N.H.
John Galt's making headlines, and progress, in Snohomish County, Wash. A feature article in the Everett Herald explained how John, the new county hearing examiner, has speeded up the whole land-use planning and approval process. He recommends action to the county planning commission after hearings, and, in some instances, the decision is solely his. "Challenging, exciting, and rewarding," says John.
Jim Cason, one of our globetrotting Foreign Service classmates, has moved his family (Carmen, Jimmy, and Billy) to Milan where he is trade promotion officer at the USS Trade Center. He's busy organizing computer trade fairs and shows throughout Southern Europe.
William Garry, who spent seven years as a professional actor, is now editor-in-chief of Free Enterprise, a New York based financial publication. ...Dick Sheaff, a graphic designer, has opened his own firm, Sheaff Design Inc., at 14 Hammondswood Road in Chestnut Hill. Dick also serves as a graphic design consultant to the Mitre Corporation, Bedford, Mass ...Ken Zuhr is a loan officer at Northern California Savings in Gilroy, Calif., while he's working toward his M.A. in geography at San Jose State College.
Rob Cleary is a landscape architect for the Bureau of Land Management in Grand Junction, Colo. And Rob has plenty of involvement with the land - the Rockies, where he jogs at 7,500 feet, or Mt. Aconcagua of Argentina (at 22,834 the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere) where he joined a three-man assault group in January.
What are your fuel bills? How does $250 a year sound? That's what Gail and Carl Fike, full-time art teachers and part-time solar system designers and builders, pay in their experimental hot-air heating system. They won a H.U.D. award in the Passive Residential Design Competition & Demonstration Program. If you want some heating design advice, contact the Fikes on Rocky Hill Road in Somersworth, N.H. 03878.
Another classmate devoting his primary attention to the land and the environment is Curt Ferguson, president of Ferguson Landscaping Co. in Boulder Creek, Calif. Curt's partner in the new Santa Cruz County firm is Brian MacNeary '67 ...Steve and Renuka Coles recently completed their first trip to mainland U.S.A. from Hawaii since 1968. It was Sean's first ever - he's five. Steve is a marine biologist with the environmental department of Hawaiian Electric Co., and his overall comment on the mainland was that the air is getting dirty. He was happy to return to his home on Kaiemi St. in Kailua.
Big Jon Colby has been promoted to manager, international marketing at Homelite, the Textron Division that makes saws, pumps, string trimmers, etc. He travels frequently, but still manages to put in hours with Anne, Chris, 12, Alex, eight, and Joanna, two.
After a decade in Cincinnati, Bill Higgins (following in Pete Rose's footsteps) pulled up stakes. He's resettled Jane, Molly, ten, Mark, seven, and John, five, in Columbus where Bill's now president of BancOhio Capital Management, an institutional investment portfolio advisor. Also at BancOhio Corp. is Dick Brigden, vice president in charge of managing the holding company's investment portfolio. Dick, Betsy, and two daughters live in Worthington, Ohio.
Bill Duval has been doing what he's been doing for ten years (not many of us can say that) ...and he loves it (or that either). He's a social studies teacher and coach in the Chittenden Central School District in Essex Junction, Vt. Barbara has her hands full with Katie, seven, Eben, five, Lindsey, four, and Abigail, two.
Other teacher/classmates include Bill Wilson, doing graduate work and teaching English to foreign students at the University of Washington; Fred Junger, principal of the Universal American Elementary School in Kuwait (wife Terry teaches second grade); and Peter Eddy, a graduate assistant pursuing a doctorial degree in pedagogy and English education at U. Mass. in Amherst.
Thanks for the enthusiastic response to the class data sheets. Keep 'em coming. Snow's still falling here in New York but the pitchers are already throwing in the Leverone Field House so spring can't be too far off.
