CLASS NOTES May 1979
Two general types read this column - the guys who matriculated with the Class of 1966 (and are modest to a fault), and the women who live with and love those modest guys (and are anxious for the world to share their accomplishments and joys). Through the years the result of this situation has been one-liners from the men and information-packed letters from the women. May this tradition flourish.
As a worthy model, I submit Jennifer Read's recent note: "Since Rick will probably never write to brag about his accomplishments - I will. He's been senior associate general counsel of the Interstate Commerce Commission for about two years and is now the proud father of Matthew Bender Read, born December 8, 1978. We have almost finished remodeling a Victorian town house on a delightful, elm-lined street near the National Zoo in downtown Washington."
In contrast, here's Dan Zehner's no-less appreciated but far more criptic message: "Luke born May 30, 1978. General law practice in Woodstown, N.J. Running-Running-Running." As a second (and last) example of the correspondence style of the Class, I cite a recent data sheet from Kit Combes, deputy editor of the portfolio section of the Washington Star, who states: "We're expecting another baby [he has two girls now] in September."
Actually, anything you send, from biographical essay to business card, is always most welcome!
Some Doctor talk: Craig Thatcher is a resident in cardiovascular surgery at Chicago's Rush-Presbyterian-St. Lukes Hospital. Wife Michele, in addition to mothering David, nine, and John Christopher, five, is also an M.D. - a resident in internal medicine at Hines Veteran Hospital, Maywood, Ill. ...Hank Streitfeld has a obstetrics and gynecology practice in Berkely, Calif. - and Pam and a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Anila ...Roy Rubin is an orthopedic surgeon in association with David Ebersbach '62 in the Southern Orthopedic Clinic in Atlanta. Connie is in charge of Heather, seven, and Lisa, three.
And now for a few lawyer briefs. Perley Grimes is a partner with Cramer and Anderson in Litchfield, Conn. He and Karen have one of each - Eric, five, and Alison, almost four. ...Doug Hill is a partner with Nungesser and Hill, general practitioners, in Meredith, N.H ...Greg Eden also has a young daughter named Allison (two "l's" and two years) and a position with the Omaha law firm of Kutak, Rock and Huie.
Noel Fidel was recently named a partner in the Phoenix firm of Langerman, Begam, Lewis, Leonard and Marks and is serving as chairman of the board of a community development group, Chicanos por la Cause. ...Parker Smith formed Smith and Langhoff, a firm specializing in Federal litigation, after experience in Federal prosecutors' and U.S. attorneys' offices, He's currently defending a Johns Hopkins University fraternity being sued for Animal House type violations.
Turning to business notes, Jamie Stewart is a vice president at the First National Bank of Boston and he's also about to earn his nightschool law degree ...Bob Zartler has been named systems analyst, data processing department, for Rogers Corporation, Rogers, Conn. He and Ann have two sons, James and Edward ...George Trumbull is now vice president at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company with responsibility for customer services in individual insurance operations.
In academia, Larry Forcier, who's oldest daughter, Natalie, is 13, is assistant director of the School of Natural Resources of the University of Vermont. ...Rick Firtel has three sons - Andy, Kenny, and Steve - and tenure as associate professor of molecular biology at the beautiful University of California at San Diego in LaJolla ...Last July Larry Herbst of Vassar became an associate professor, tenured, and chairman of the Department of Economics. Then Arno Press published his book (which has a very long title) on post-Civil War U.S. trade.
Now here's an interesting approach. I'll just give the address, you fill in the rest. It's easy. Ready? Mark Blanchard, Caltex Oil Thailand Ltd. (Got it.) David Hightower, Metro Manila, Philippines; Bill Koelsch, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Lawyer Vic Portanova, Beverly Hills, Calif. Jim Yarman, Eljim Realty Ldt., Toronto. Mike Smith, General Steel and Wire Co., Lynwood, Calif.
A final sobering piece of news. Paul Semple has a private law practice in Concord and New London, N.H., under the shingle of McSwiney, Jones and Semple. He also teaches at Franklin Pierce Law School in Concord. Last year Paul, his wife Barbara, and eight-year-old son Chris lost two-and-a-half-year-old Kate when she was struck by a car on the night of June 28. The family endures. I know, because Barbara was kind enough to write.
