CLASS NOTESJuly-August 2009

John Hargraves has at least two recent accomplishments to be proud of. He is the winner of the 2009 Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize, awarded annually by the Goethe-Institut Chicago to a literary translation from German in the preceding year. John won for The Executor, a translation of Michael Kruger's tragicomic Die Turiner Komodie.

And John, along with Gary Broughton, Jim Lustenader, Chuck Sherman, Gus Southworth and Bob Spence, followed trip-leader John Rollins on a snowshoe trek up central New Hampshire's Rattlesnake Mountain this winter. John's piano playing and singing, in at least two languages, added to the evening merriment.

In New Hampshire, Washington, D.C., and the Bay Area '66ers celebrated the 66th night of the year. At Perry's (Butler '64) Restaurant in San Francisco Connie and Dean Anderson, Pete Barber, Roger Brett, Georgia and Jim Hazard, Ken Ireland, Bob Page, Harold Stoddard and Ken Zuhr gathered to renew old ties and forge new ones.

Tim Butterworth was elected to the New Hampshire Legislature representing Cheshire County. Wasn't that Obama fellow in the state legislature in Illinois just a few months ago? Watch out 2016! Tim taught middle and high school English for about 30 years, including stints as an English as a Second Language teacher in Bolivia, Spain and Costa Rica.

He's been active on local town boards and commissions for years and was a selectman. It may be early, but Tim's wife, Kay, a special education teacher, and his three kids and two grandkids may be planning a house-hunting trip to D.C. anytime now. Who could fault his platform - universal health care, environmental protection and fair taxes.

We've hit a rough patch in March and April. Three classmates have passed away - Curt Ferguson, Roger Kline and John Peterson. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends. Obituaries will appear online and in future issues of the Alumni Magazine.

Hold close those who are dear.
