67's 60th Birthday
 |
A terrific turnout overcame record rains and expectable excuses about failing body and mental parts, as 67 turned 60 at a three day party requiring three venues in two states. Our thanks to Reunion Master Bruce Pacht, who, as always, created a wondrous, magical event. |
Early arrivers on Friday October 7 gathered at Baker's Hill in Newbury , New Hampshire courtesy of member Steve Cheheyl, to pretend to play golf, which only Joe Alviani really did. While the group was supposedly divided into reasonably even foursomes, Paul Killebrew was the first to suggest "no scorekeeping," which produced the first unanimous vote in 67 history. Despite that agreement, two scores to report - Alviani shot a 78 on a course he had never seen, and Rich Paolino - without trying to - hit at least one trap on every hole. The course - rated as one of New England's best new courses - was absolutely stunning, particularly with the leaves at peak, and offered Mark Twain weather - we experienced all four seasons in one round. And, most ominously, over the hilltops we could see the storm moving in which eventually brought 8 inches of rain in the next 36 hours. But, 67 luck held for a while as the rolling party headed towards John and Gail Wasson's absolutely beautiful barn in the countryside of Lebanon , New Hampshire . John and Gail decorated the barn beautifully with fall flowers, and left half of the upstairs open for conversation while setting the other half with tables around which we enjoyed a wonderful barbecue buffet dinner. While many 67's were proudly discussing grandchildren, Bob Mark was tending children clearly under ten years of age, making us all feel much younger. Only as the party broke up, did the rain begin to fall. Saturday dawned WET. While over 20 67's and enough wives to have female competitors in every foursome had signed up for the 67 Open and Shut at Quechee Lakes , the golf pro said, "Well, you can walk if you want." The temperature being in the low 40's, the rain a steady downpour, and the puddles already visible in the fairways by 9:00 AM, we had our second unanimous vote, decided to light the logs in the fireplace of the Quechee Base Lodge, and spent the day swapping reminiscences, catching up, organizing shopping trips to Lebanon and Woodstock, visiting art and craft galleries and generally enjoying each other's company in exactly the relaxed setting we all hoped to enjoy. Our birthday dinner was held in a beautiful large tent, which kept us dry from the top, but with the rain coming down so quickly, the ground underneath became saturated, and dancing soon was out of the question even for those remaining 67's not using artificial hips and knees as this era's excuse. After dinner, which fortunately was served downstream of the rising tide, the 'Aires entertained with wonderful songs of Dartmouth and the 60's and serenaded Bill Adam's wife Carol in recognition of all of the wives and significant others who have so blessed our lives. A champagne toast was proposed to the Great Class, and Happy Birthday was sung over a cake with enough candles to light our many ways safe home.
Distance traveled awards went to Andy and Jean Danver and Joe and Beth Furstenthal from California and Tom Woodruff from Colorado . "I always wanted a dormitory named after me" awards to Paul and Joyce Killebrew and Rob and Sandy Kugler, who kindly housed enough 67's to provide a healthy rivalry to - and far better amenities than - the Hanover Inn. The "Why am I here" award to Chuck Sherman, Class of 66. Among those joining in the celebration:
