The Class Committee has approved a new initiative designed to recognize over time the many classmates who have impressive histories of service, not only to Dartmouth, but more generally. It is called "The Class of 1968 Give A Rouse Award." It will be given annually to classmates in recognition of their distinguished service to one or more communities (local, state, national, international), professions, or organizations (including Dartmouth and our Class). Any classmate may nominate any other classmate, and the nominations will be considered by a committee of classmates appointed to perform this function. We strongly encourage all classmates to participate. Now for the important details on how to participate.
Nuts and Bolts of the Give A Rouse Award Nomination Time-line and Procedures
• All classmates are eligible for the Award. The definition of “classmate” is as broad as possible, including entered late, graduated early, graduated with a later class, or transferred to another college. We will also present the Award posthumously.
• You must use our Nomination Form to make a nomination.
• The Class “year” is July 1 – June 30. We will accept nominations until December 31 each year. The Committee will select the Award recipients no later than March 1 of the following year.
• Every honoree will have the option to accept or decline the Award.
• Award recipients will usually be honored at the Class meeting in May, and will receive a framed, glass-protected citation.
• The Committee has 8 members: the Class Vice-President as Chair; the Class President in an ex officio capacity; and six at-large members who serve at the pleasure of the Committee. Should a seat become open, the Committee will invite a suitable Classmate to fill the seat.
• The Committee shall make decisions to select recipients for the Award where its members, using elastic criteria, reach consensus that the nominee(s) are deserving in that year. Where a clear consensus does not exist, those in the majority will give due regard to the strongly held views of a substantial minority. In the unlikely event that a consensus cannot be reached, the chair may then call for a vote. If a vote is called, a minimum of 5 “Yes” votes by the eight-person Committee will be required for a nominee to be selected for the Award.
• A classmate making a nomination should submit a Nomination Form that includes the nominee’s name, rationale for the nomination, and other pertinent information to the Give A Rouse Committee.
• The number of recipients each year will be determined at the discretion of the Committee, depending in part on the size of the nominee pool.
• Weight will be given to nominated classmates previously unrecognized by Dartmouth or the Class.
• All inquiries or questions should be directed to the Give A Rouse Committee.
