The site is managed by the Class Webmaster in order to support Class goals and activities as directed by the Officers.

The site is hosted on the Dartmouth servers and has to abide by Dartmouth's computing, privacy, security and fair use guidelines. Other than that, the site is independent of the College and does not represent College policy.

Internet security is a huge and complex topic. Issues fall into several categories.

• Server security refers to the need to make sure that the software and data on a server are protected from intrusions. This is not a trivial task. Most commercial hosts and corporate hosts have professionals managing this and are fine. Server maintenance is not something the average amateur computer user should attempt.


• Internet software security refers making sure that the programs communicating with servers (browsers, E-mail clients, FTP programs) are secure.


• Hacking protection refers to the need to build systems to prevent skilled computer users with bad intentions from breaking into or damaging the server or its data.


• Privacy protection means providing systems to prevent data from being available to the wrong people.

The Class site contains personal information including names, addresses, phone numbers, E-mail addresses, photographs, family information and more. This information is something we are comfortable sharing among the '69 community but would not want freely available.

In addition, putting information like E-mail addresses and interactive forms and Forums behind password protection, prevents the site from being spammed or used as a 'relay station' to send spam elsewhere.

This is a simply and pretty reliable way to keep automated programs from registering on the site and filling it with spam or using it as a relay station to send spam elsewhere.

Probably because you used 'forbidden characters' in the username. The software refuses to allow spaces and some characters that are used in software code. Instead of spaces, one can use the underscore (_) character.

No. But you can register a second time with a different username.

Yes. Log in, go to 'My Account' and select 'Edit your information.' Scroll to the bottom of that page. You have to enter the new password twice to prevent typographical errors and then click 'Submit' and your password is immediately changed.

You can also email the Webmaster and ask to have your password set to a new password of your choosing.

Use the link to 'Register for a user account' or 'Log in Problems' on the front page and then select 'Retrieve lost password.' Enter the E-mail address you used when you registered on the site and click the send password button. The site will send a confirmation code to the E-mail address it has on file for you. Then enter your E-mail address and the confirmation code you got into the form and click the 'Send Password' button and you will be sent a new password.

Cookies do not deserve their bad reputation. They are simply little files that the site stores on your computer so it knows it is you when you go from page to page or come back to the site after leaving or logging out. They are not used here for anything else and have no personal identifying information. The site will not work without them.
